Advice requested with SSD cache vs standalone SDD

I am planning to buy a SSD to breathe some new life into my old machine (in sig). Now i see there are these SSD's with the sole purpose of being used as a cache in tandem with a hdd.

From what i understand, a cache SSD (the sandisk readycache for example) seems to be more of a "plug n play" option vs an SSD with a fresh OS install on it. Now what would be the best option in this regard? I have my eye on either the readycache (which is the cheapest option for 40 euro orso or a samsung 830/840 128GB SDD which would cost me around 90 euro).

So in the case where a SSD is going to be used as main drive (for OS, programs/games) the WD hdd is gonna be used as secondary disk for data (music, pics, vids etc)

Would the seperate SDD where i would install the OS on be faster then a caching option?
 
I think the separate SSD is the better option and probably more convenient to deal with also. The last thing you want is for frequently used music or videos to be brought into a cache drive with limited space. (Not that that would necessarily happen, and you can probably configure what gets cached.) But an SSD is basically a "set it and forget it" operation with consistent performance from the first day.
 
I happen to have a Sandisk readycache, 32GB I think. I bought it because I did not want to reload all of our software on our larger SSD. So our OS and programs are on a hard drive.

We use mostly business software and over the last month of usage the readycache is less than half full. I don't think that playing music is going to affect performance by filling up the cache.
 
SSD caching can be really all over the place depending on the solution you are using.

Intel SRT works extremely well, and you'd be hard pressed to identify a difference between a computer that was installed directly onto an SSD and a computer using Intel SRT caching, once it's had a chance to cache stuff. Part of this is likely because SRT functions at least partially on the hardware level. Unfortunately only a few chipsets, Z68, Z77, etc support SRT.

The purely software-based SSD caching solutions are much more hit or miss IMO. It's a shame really, for anyone who tries this and ends up forming a bunch of negative opinions about SSD caching - without realizing just how much better Intel SRT is.
 
In light of your comments I dhouls say I have my Sandisk readycache installed on a new computer with a Z77 and I7 3770. Much faster with the cache.
