I know this questions has probably been posted more than a few times. I have recently built a new system AMD 64 3.2 with 512 pc3200ddr. Currently I'm using my old and outdated Radeon 9000pro. The card has done well for me over the past few years alot longer than I expected it would have. I'm not having any issues with it yet. After moving it from my old P3 900 every game runs way faster.

My need for advice is should I upgrade to a better card yet. I currently have $200 to spend. Would it be a better decision to stick it out and save up for an x800 model? I havent really looked at Nviidia yet, do they have anything that would be worth whle?

I don't like buying a card only to want to upgrade a year later. What would be the best bet for the bext few years?

Thanks for any help in advance this is my first PC build everything has gone smoothely I'm just not wanting to have to upgrade this time next year on anything except maybe ram. ;)

Nothing will last a few years and still have decent performance.
 
So far i've heard much talk about the upcoming 6600gt from nvidia, and at around $199, you can't go wrong with that price and performance package.

As for ATI now, for around $200 you can pick yourself up a 9600xt or "the now mainstream" 9800pro. I'd go with the later.

As for nVidia, i'm not so sure about their cards at similar prices.

My next purchase though will definately be a 6600gt.

I think thats a loaded statement. I think that any of the lastest gen cards will last a couple years and still have decent performance. In 2006 they may not be able to run games at the highest settings but none the less, still be able to run the game and at decent frame rates.

But I agree with kick@ss' other statement to research as many benchmarks as possible. After much deliberation, I decided that the 6800GT was the best bang for you buck. IMO.
 
You could easily get 100 for your card and then spend 100 and get the 6600gt APG version. That would give you a significant upgrade for just 100 out of pocket

Check that I thought you said 9800, its a 9000. So you would get 25 bucks for it but the 6600Gt would be my recomendation given your budget
 
The 9000 pro was/is still a pretty good card (I would take it over any fx5200 or 5500, or radeon 9200 or even a 9600se)...but yeah, it's showing it's age. For $200? I would say either save up for a 6800 (Fry's outpost has the BFG 6800OC for $249 http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4082672)...the 6800 WILL last you a year or two...most other $200 options really won't.

However, if you HAVE to get something now and $200 is your absolute cap...a 9800 pro is your only viable option, get the MSI flavor and mod it to an XT.

As for the 6600GT, it would be worth waiting for if you want to stay at $200, as long as you don't mind waiting a few months or more...
 
For $200 here are you 2 best options

1. 9800pro ($180-200)
2. 6800nu (non ultra $200)

The 6800nu out performs the 9800pro by far and will last longer. It would be a wise decision to buy either of these 2 cards, but I would go for the 6800nu. Good luck with your decision.

Where are you getting a 6800nu for $200??
