Currently running a Dell T7400 w/ 1 quad core and 32 gigs of ram as my home ESXi host.

I dont have money for new hardware but I was thinking I found a nice set of matched quad cores for 35 bucks, any thoughts on this?

I could run more systems with dual cpus
 
Do you have a VMWare License? I think the free only covers 1 CPU, or at least it used to.
 
ah crap- well i guess ill have to find a new solution to this problem. Any ideas?
 
The limitations in 6.0 are the same as 5.5. You can have unlimited cores and RAM up to two physical sockets. A VM can only have up to 8 vCPUs. (There is more but shortened down to answer your question.) In short, if you can use more processor and have the funds, go for it.

sweet, didn't know they lifted the 1 socket limit on the free version!
 
i have licensed 5.5 so im guessing I should be ok- worst case I can make a server 08 box with workstation, but Id rather keep esx if I can

As long as you've done your homework on compatible CPUs and make sure that you get a heat sink for the second CPU (as your T7400 won't have one for the absent CPU) you should be good. Drop it in and rock more horsepower!
