Advice on Resetting up my server?

My htpc is being built. but will be a mini system running off the server. Now at the same time. My main pc is doing the downloading extracting. ripping converting ETC and im firing them over the network tot he server.

so ALL the server does is share drives lol.

right now its win xp corp. a bitchy lil whiner of a os. which does not like be remotly shut down. hates being rebooted when its frozen etc. and the pc is lower end.

It shares all its drives to my main pc where i can organize the files and such. they are mapped to my "my computer"
and then my htpc will look into the server someway similair.

I'm looking for a VERY low end linux distro i can use that will easily allow me to isntall. will read NTFS, and will let me share drive sin a manner that my xp pc can see it.
even something i can reboot with telnet commands or such off the main pc.

Any recomendations? I'm new to linux but would love to learn so i figure why not now :)

Why restrict yourself to NTFS? XFS >> NTFS IMO. Debian is relatively easy to install, and very powerful. That's my suggestion.

Someone will indubitably suggest Gentoo. I say no, because you want to get things done with this machine. Gentoo takes too much expertise to get working properly, and it's too easy to delete all your stuff while you're getting things working.

ntsf is what my drives currently are. and have things on them. 2x250 and 1x300. if there is a better file system format to use. i could probably convert as i think i have the space to shuffle and so on.

I will look into debian. Is there a way tomake it share this as one massive storage drive?

and whats xfs? :)

Any fileserver like that should be running raid for drive redundancy, as well as regular incremental backups.
300GiB SATA drives are down to around $100 a pop, throw several together in raid for a nice fileserver with plenty of storage.
 
that is the future plan. to raid them. but right now i only have the three ide drives. sadly. this month i hope to be able tog et another 1 or 2. but im putting work into my car which lowers my budget :(
 
What size are the drives you're using? It's quite easy to slap together a software raid under Linux, which would give you the redundancy and the "one big drive" all at once.
