Is it normal to not be able to overclock 5% above stock speeds with the stock cooler? It crashes on windows boot! I want to know if I am limited by something other than the stock HSF, because I invest more money into a nice cooler. Right now I can only OC about 3% above stock speeds without it becoming incredibly unstable.

My setup:
Proc: AMD 5200+ w/ Stock cooler
RAM: 2GB DDR800 Mushkin 5-5-5-12 (@ 4-4-4-12)
PSU: 550w
Mobo: ASUS M2n-SLI Deluxe

Thanks :D

Well, first off...

If you are trying to overclock that memory at 4-4-4-12 timings when it's rated for 5-5-5-12, and you haven't even tried a voltage bump, I'd say that's your problem.

Maybe change the timings back to stock and see what happens, or maybe a small voltage bump.

thanks to everyone so far, i will try these solutions when i get home from work and report back. =]

thanks

Hey check your bios ! if you are using 903bios. ASUS pulled it off thier site because of numerouse reboots errors bad memory timings it was creating! 903 bios was my default bios when i purchesed my board and couldnt figure out why memory wasnt working with the correct voltage and ram settings! It was even cusing me to bsod while lowering my memory to 533 and 400! I installed the New 1101 bios ,works great Even Overclocks well.

wierd, i have the 903 bios and everything is working perfectly, and i also check a couple days ago and it was still there.

as for your overclocking, i dont think you are OC'ing correctly, its much more involved than just rasing the FSB/HTT speed.

bring your CPU multipier down to like 6x, HTT to like 3x, then use clockgen to find the highest stable speed of the HTT link (raise by 3mhz every 30 seconds till crash while running prime95, when it does crash subtract 5 mhz from that clock and run it again for 30 minutes, if there is no crash then thats the best FSB/HTT that you will get.

then set the CPU multiplier back to stock (keep HTT at 3x) and see how high you can clock your CPU... follow the same thing you did for the HTT speed OC. once you get that calculate the the highest clock you can get while keeping the HTT under 1000mhz.

after all of that, OC your memory... and yer set.

a good guide is on eclipseOC i think..
