Advice on moving aging system to SSD raid0

Hey guys. I am looking to grab two ssds like the OCZ ARC 100 drives and replace two mechanical drives I use to boot from that are presently in Raid0 on my ICH10. My mobo is a gigabyte x58 UD4P and has SATAII ports on it.

I am presently using crossfire in 16x16x and have the last pcie 8x slot empty so I could use that to add a SataIII controller in. My question is, would I really loose out on a lot of speed if I just used the onboard ich10 with trim enabled to raid0 the ssd drives?

Any advice appreciated.

You probably won't notice the speed difference from SATA2 to SATA3 unless you do a lot of sequential file copies. I'd stick to the native SATA2 if I were you.

That said, just get a single larger capacity SSD instead of 2 smaller ones.

No need for RAID0 unless you're doing something out of the ordinary. The SSD is THAT fast.

Not sure about the OCZ ARC drives as I haven't heard anything about it.

Try Samsung 850 Pro/Evo or Crucial MX500?

I suppose the technicality that I am hung up on is this...

One 480 gig drive on the sataII will give me 275megs/s but raid 0 would at least be double that on the ICH10, no? This way i can get near sataIII speeds with two ssds.

Your call on that I guess, but you'll only see that speed differences when copying few, large files.

And in those situations, it's just a few extra seconds anyway.

I'd rather have a larger SSD that I can move to a new system next time vs two smaller ones I'll need to setup in RAID0 to "see" as a single drive.

So if your stuck on getting sata 3 speed get a basic controller and a single 480 still. Less likely to fail. Going from an had you're already going to very happy with the perormance of one ssd. Keep It Simple

I use an 840 Pro on sata 2 and it's quite adequate for speed needs. And I do regularly work with 840 evo's on Sata 3. No great jump in performance that I notice

Thanks for the input, guys. Any flavor of sataIII controllers play nicely with gigabyte x58 mobos? I should be fine with one drive on the pcie 1x slot then, right?

Just use the Intel ports and forget about sequential benchmarks that do not have any significance to most applications.

Just plug it into your motherboard. I have an 840 Evo hooked up to a P5Q motherboard with zero performance issues.
