Advice on games

After a long absence from pc gaming, im ready to get back in to it. I was a big fan of the id games, but that was back in the day before the source code was released and people upgraded the graphics.

I recently bought the id superpack and the unreal deal on steam, I also upgraded my pc, to intel q8200, 4gb ram, ati 4670 . I want to get the most i can from these great id classics and be able play time i get the pc built. Parts shipped from newegg today! What are the best mods for each game? Doom series, quake series, heretic/hexen (never played these), wolf 3d.

I've heard about gldoom (or something like that). Played with it, but that was like 3-4 years ago. Dont know if thats the best mod for it.

Quake 1 ive d/l darkplaces, also with rygels 2.7gb ultra pack.

I've heard about doom 3 with some type of mod for parralax mapping?

Also is there anything like that for the unreal series?

If you just want old stuff and mods, can't help you there. On the other hand, if you want some of the notable games that have come out in the last three years...

Portal (This game is simply too awesome to be limited by a genre classification. If you get nothing else, get this.)

Test Drive Unlimited (flexible, open-world driving game)

pickup half-life and then get Orange Box (includes Portal)

Dungeon Siege is pretty sweet

Jagged Alliance 2

TOCA Race Driver 3

Quake 4 is the game Doom 3 should have been

Battlefield 2

No One Lives Forever 1 and 2

Prey is probably the most interesting FPS in awhile.
