Advice on Bluetooth Speakers

I'm looking to get my son some bluetooth speakers to use with his phone for Christmas. He sits in his room playing games with his phone beside him playing music and it just sounds terrible. So I want to get him something decent. I'm not interested in any of the "pill" type speakers and it doesn't have to be portable. I'm thinking of going with something like 2.1 speakers. I found some Creative speakers at BB for $50. Not sure about my budget; first I was going to go cheap ($50) but then thought I might go up to $150 if I can get something significantly better. But I don't see a lot of options. Seems like Creative has more than anyone else. Just hoping to get some opinions and maybe suggestions I might've missed.

to be very honest, some of the "pill" type solutions are very good (as long as you don't need bass below 55-75hz). The rev. 2 UE mini boom is incredible for $99 (rev.1 is like $60), and the full size UE boombox (the one with the carrying handle) actually does goes down to 55hz, which is as good as many bookshelf speakers. The jambox/jambox big and bose offerings are good as well - just more expensive. I suggest you find a store that has them to go listen - the sound quality and convenienve has advanced quite a bit from the first generation of bluetooth portable speakers.

If you really need the bass and stereo imaging, then a traditional 2.1 setup is what you want. maybe a pair of dayton/monoprice speakers, a cheap t-amp, and a $80-100 polk or dayton sub. The problem is you have to get a bluetooth wireless dongle to go with them, and it would be more of a hassle to setup while being in no way portable. The Creative Inspire S2 might be a better choice for convenience.
