I am getting ready to upgrade my current 9800gt for my b-day and am not sure which route to take. Both the 4870 1gb and the 260gtx(216) are my possible candidates as I want to stay with a single card and in the $200-250 price range. I play mostly RPG and FPS games on a 32" LCD @ 1920x1080. I typically get pretty good frame rates in most older games with all settings turned on but some newer content I've had to scale back some of the eye candy. My understanding is that this is primarily due to my current card only having 512mb of ram. I also know that the 4890 is somewhat close to release as well. Would you go with the 4870 and the larger amount of ram or the 260 which(last i looked is a bit cheaper) or wait for the 4890?

You might as well wait.
At the very least, the 4890/GTX 275 will drive down current prices. Who knows, maybe even the GTX 280/285 will get pushed down into your price range?

How long after the new cards are released will the 280/4870 go down. I have a 9800gtx that ill be upgrading from soon.

should be within a few days of launch, as demand dries up for 4870/gtx260 they will lower prices to increase demand.

Nice, any idea on the prices. This is my first time watching card prices.

4870 can be had for as little as $150 and gtx260 i think for $160-170 i would'nt expect them to go much lower then that tho, maybe 130-140 for the 4870 and 150-160 for the gtx

and one more thing...

Happy birthday Viscero340, I hope you have a great one.

i really dont se those cards getting that cheap. Look at whats below them and how much they cost. If they did that it would push the 4830 to $50. Can you really see that happeneing?
