Requirements:

-rackmountable or AV cabinet mountable
-8+ drive capacity
-fast enough to stream say 40mbit/s over network (1080p a/v editing)
-hotswappable, or if not hotswap, I'd atleast like to be able to swap out HDs without opening up the case.
-CHEAP
-quiet

Any suggestions? AVSforum's got a decent couple of builds recommended but they're less of a pc hardware community than a pure a/v forum.

norcotek.com, check out their rackmount storage solutions.

also, newegg sells them

I would get a supermicro rack mount case with a big backplane and setup a raid-z in solaris.

That has to be at least the 3rd time today i've heard you recomend raid-z :D is it that good?

Yep, seems to be the cheapest way to get a fast failproof array. ;)

Offers an extensive range of fetures.

Seems to be very easy to manage. To create an array its just one command, dont need to fuss with mounting, formatting etc. If a drive fails its just another simple comand to replace the disk and start rebuilding.
