A friend's son wants to play BF2 on his Dell. The current GF4 MX 440 ain't gonna cut it. So for his system;
Dimension 4600
3GHZ P4
512MB PC3200
120 GB HD
(dont know the mainboard or power supply specs)

Which of these two cards would be the better choice?
eVGA 6600

or
PowerCooler x700

These are the 'choosen' ones because of price. If you have any other suggestions at or below these costs, they would be greatly appreciated.

Screw those, looking that you're in the $110-150 range, get the 6600GT. If not, then the 6600.

Battlefield 2 is more of a Ram bitch, you can rn it on 9800pro decent if you have 2gb of ram. However the card he has now sucks, you are gonna have to get at least 1gb of ram, then get the 6600gt. But if you do not have the funds get 6600gt it will help a bit more.

Ain't that the truth.

He's right. Whatever video card you're trying to afford, try to work in an extra 512 ram into the equation. It'll help BF2 immensely. Of course, make sure his Dell has an open ram slot first.

4600 I think it based on the 865 mobo, so I assume you have 2 x 256 in there now, with room for another 2 x 256 = 1Gb total that should allow him to play decently with a 6600GT.

1Gb + 6600GT, and set the AGP aperature to 256Mb in the BIOS also. (that BIOS trick helped out my friend with a Dell 4550 + 6800nu)

BF2, needs 1Gb of ram (2Gb for best results) and a 6600 or greater (6800nu/GT for best results)

6600GT = $119
or 6800nu = $179

2x256Mb PC3200 = $47
or 2 x 1Gb (and pull old stuff out) = $170

So min $170 approx for both upgrades or
$350 for a damn good gaming system with 2Gb of ram!

i would definately recommend a 6600gt. i have used a 6600 and 6600gt side by side. the difference is amazing. its a much better card for very little more. a rum upgrade is a must though. You will have a real hard time playing BF2 on 512MB of ram. even with the best video cards out there, 512 would not cut it fot BF2.

Just walked his mom through buying the GT and memory suggested by chrisf6969 through Newegg. Her son is paying for the card (hence the price point), and she is gonna foot the bill for the memory.

Thanks for the help. He should be a happy camper once I get it all installed for him.

my 9800 pro runs the game fine with 1 gig of ram, no noticeable problems at all.

A 9800 pro would be better than either of those cards. And cheeper too.

with 1GB of ram a a 6600gt, I have played battlefield no problem. graphics pumped up, not to high of a resolution though. i run it at 1024 high detail or 1280 mid detail. works fine.

A 9800 pro can't keep up with a mid to high end geforce 6 unless you oc the crap out of it. To compete with a geforce 6 you need X800/X700xx series. Wow such vulgar claims. :confused:

$200 and you got yourself a used x800xl. I ran game maxed ou with 4xaa with no problem, 120x1024. However try going for 6600gt insead, it is alot cheaper and will deliver good performance.
