From what i've seen of the FEAR game and bf2 ... and hl2 and doom3 :D .. these games look awesome and I definately wanna try them out. Does anyone know if a bba 9800 pro would work decently with these? If not, what if I OC it? I'd be running a 1280x1024 reso .. I don't care about graphics as much as gameplay.. i'd like to get a decent, stable fps tho

I'm currently running on an ati brand 9600 w/ a coolviva and some generic ramsinks on it. I haven't OCed the sucker (last one died while OCed w/ a vga silencer), but my CS won't even run a stable 60 fps. Is this just cause the grahpics card sucks or because i'm not setting something correctly? I used to have an MSI ti4600, and my friend got me up to a stable 90 fps simply by changing some of the properties. Any ideas?
 
You should be having no trouble at all with CS. My GF 4 MX ran it at a solid 99FPS. Do the obvious: update drivers, run antivirus/spyware scans, defrag.

As for the 9800 Pro, It'll run HL2 fine at most settings, Doom 3 playable at 1024x768, however FEAR and BF2 will eat it for a light afternoon snack.
 
BF2 runs fine on a 9800 Pro, 1024x768 on medium settings, looks decent and runs decent.
 
I was runnin cs off a newly formatted disk before. New drivers of course, since I dl'ed them from the ATI site. I didn't do a full norton system scan or anything since it was a newly formatted disk.. and installin norton + updating it is the first thing I do. If I set fps_max to 90, it'll only go up to 70s and crap out after a while (prob from heatin up). I don't think ram would be a problem, since i was doin 2-2-2 w/ my mushkin... I wasn't overclocking though (dont' think that'd be an issue anyhow). I really think it's some kinda settings that I'm not doin right. I even set the catalyst driver things all the way to performance.

btw, what do you mean by decently? I'd like it smoothly for multiplayer mainly. Think I can get a stable 60 fps? I noticed that all the people playing bf2 had like 6800gts or x800 pros and those super expensive cards.
 
For smoothness in BF2 you'd probably have to go down to 8x6 on your card...

Anyway, as for your card's performance... heat related possibly? Make sure there is adequate ventilation.
 
well.. If I play for along time setting the max fps at 60. It keeps in the 50-60 range always. I dont' think it has too much of a heating issue considering the stock heatsink is just that passive black thing. However, If i play on a really big map.. or 32 man server.. it'll lag if like half the team pops out of the DD on dust2 .. and of course.. it'll do some strobe action and smooth out when i'm dead :D

If i didn't have the same problems before when using the vga silencer and even stock heatsink, I might consider that it's heat.. but I really don't think airflow is a problem in my case. On the other hand.. I do live in hotlanta, GA :D

I guess as for the 9800 pro.. maybe I'll look towards a 6800gt or x800 ? I'm kinda iffy on that because i'm happy w/ my computer running nearly silent.. yes.. those darn silentpc enthusiasts that want performance as well ;D I do think zalman's vga silencer would do well on those though? and would run relatively quiet? any thoughts?
 
You can run all of those games smooth.But when fear comes out you will be running at low resolutions and low graphics.
 
crap crap.. fear was the game i was most looking forward to playin :D maybe i'll have to shell out a couple hundred xtra bux to play it... hmm.. but is it really worth it..... I guess i'll get a 9800 pro and see how the other games run first, then decide later for FEAR after some friends get it.
