Ok, here's the situation. I was currently running an 1800+ on an ABIT KR7A-133R, I just recently (a few months ago) bumped the RAM up to 1 gig PC2700. Well a few weeks ago the 1800 bit the dust. I don't really have the flow to do a complete upgrade, and I didn't wanna abandon my RAM and video card (GF4-Ti4600), as they both seem to serve me well. At first I was just going to max out the processor that will fit on my board, (2100+) but it seems like there are a few faster processors/mobo combos that will allow me to take the video card up to 8x and still keep my ram.

So the question is this, what would be the most bang for buck processor/mobo combo with 333mhz fsb, 8x agp and IDE raid (I run several drives)? I have about $150 to $180 to spend. Whatever I get, hopefully will only need to tide me over for another 9-12 months.

Anyone's constructive feedback is greatly appreciated. ;)
 
i second hito's suggestion. the mobile athlon-xp's are awesome performace/price once it's oc'ed

i would do this:

157.73 shipped. much, much better deal IMO, K8 is a much better architechture than K7, and you will definatly feel the difference that this setup will make over the mobile. it will also likely OC further, its on a 90nm process - also supports SSE2. you can upgrade to an a64 2800+ for just about 40 dollars more if you like. all this would give you a higher clock speed, 256 extra cache, and x86-64 instructions. the cache wont matter much, and overclocking can cure that clockspeed easy. you wouldnt have x86-64 on the mobile anyway :)

your memory will work. just set hte DDR333 divider, and dividers do not hurt the K8 architecture at all.
 
VIA KT266A chipset...

If the board is still good for you then try to find these for out of the box upgrades:
Barton 2800+ (266) = RARE
Thorough bred B XP2600+ (266) = RARE
Barton MP2800+ (266) = Expensive
Barton XP-M 3000+ (266) = Best bang for your buck

somehow i doubt the KT266A will support barton... although that does depend on the board, and newer chipsets give so much better performance than teh kt133/266. those were just terrible sets.

any money you spend on a socketA setup is wasted at this point, i really believe that. athlon 64 based setups are just much snappier and can handle multitasking much better. go with teh 754 setup :)

Not to start any shit here but...

Are you absolutely sure?...these cpu's work on the even older SiS 730, and 735 chipsets...

All the cpu's mentioned above work in the so called "Cheap Ass" PCC/ECS VIA KT & SiS 7xx chipsets...Shouldn't be a problem for the oh so better quality ABIT board (cough cough bad caps class action lawsuite cough cough)...

no... it was just an assumption, but now you have me wondering... *goes to find mATX MSI kt266 board*... i always assumed that because of the chips age and hte die shink, they wouldnt work... not to mention that all bartons (ive never heard of a desktop chip 2800+ with 266... linkage?) have a bus of 333, so tehre would be no reason for board makers to include support in a bios revision...

even it if will support the barton though, spend a few extra bucks and get teh 754 setup. youll be much happier with it.
 
My K7S5A with SiS 735 chipset will run a Barton, Mobile Barton, or Low powered Barton without breaking a sweat, and it's officially only rated for 200/266 bus cpu's...Mainy of these so called "garbage" boards will do it...

have you checked the MSI forums...although they do not "officially" support these cpu's many people do run them successfully!

The 2800+
AXDA2800DKV4C, is a special built OEM cpu that AMD made for Compaq/HP, there is no official LINK for it since it is OEM, that also includes the XP2900+ sold at Tiger direct..another oddball OEM cpu...There are Asus boards that support the 266 bus 2800+ cpu, any other board will probably just call it a 2600+, since the 2600+ (266) runs at 16x133, the same as the Barton 2800+ (266)..on a K7S5A it is more than likelly recognized as a 2600+. As it stands..socket 754 is relegated to the older A64's and Semprons...it only has a future as a K8 sempron system platform...socket 939 is changing too rapidly for any real investment...the market is dictating the upgrade, personally I do not see any real benefit at this point in time.

and mobile chips. a high end barton or a mobile barton is going to run him ~90-200 bucks. why not just invest taht in a better setup? a sempron/NF3 will kill a barton with a KT266A.
 
Another for the Epox/2800+ Sempron. You will be able to upgrade this processor in a few months or a year to even a 3700+ A64 which will still hold it's own. With the Mobile XP you can overclock and that's about it...
I've had a mobile XP, a 754, and now a 939. The mobile to 754 was a very nice jump. If you play any games there is no comparison. And you can always overclock that Sempron. Most go to at least 2.2 on stock cooling...which will chew up and spit out an XP and run cooler doing it.
 
Alright. Sempron/Epox wins, I ordered from Newegg last night. I guess I was scared of the Semprons, cause I figured they were the newer equivelent version of the Durons, and I didn't want a "crippled" chip. So with this setup I should be able to increase my FSB to 333mhz and my AGP to 8X correct? I'm thinking I will see a pretty good boost in overall performance.

Is there anything special I need to know/do to overclock the Sempron? Is the multiplier factory unlocked or am I just gonna boost the FSB?

Thanks again everybody who replied. I like the idea of being able to do a couple more small upgrades before having to take the plunge into a whole new machine. Especially with 939 and PCI-e being so new.

well, technically they are, but durons were never really bad... celerons are what really sucked (at least teh northwood ones) and for the price, you cant beat a K8 sempron. sure, the athlon 64's are going to edge it out slightly (that is, if you dont overclock) but they are more expensive and not worth it if you are on a very stringent budget. that sempron should overclock to at least 2.2, if not higher, and will kill any barton you put it up against.

i believe semprons are fully multi-locked, and athlon 64's are unlocked down... but im not sure. sempys could be unlocked down too, but then you would need to raise your bus speed even more. its easy to overclock a K8, just go read the FAQ on it. there are a couple more variables than on a K7 machine, but its fun regardless :)

I use that board with my Duron 1.3 for folding....I love the K7S5A!!!
