Hey guys,

I have a buddy of mine who wants a laptop and as much as i know stuff about desktop pc's.
I am not much educated when looking for laptops. I know there is of course two CPU brands once again we have the AMD's and Intel's. What specs should i be looking at?
My friend's budget is prob in the 800-1000$ range. Any information regarding what i should look for when purchasing a laptop would be great thanks guys. Also if brand is applicable that woudl be good too.

Ahh yes the laptop.

Well picking a laptop is way different that pickign pc. Laptops are generally harder to build your self and are not so upgrade friendly, know lots about laptops but i think the guys at www.notebookforums.com (which seem like a hardforum counterpart for laptops XD)can help you with your friends laptop purchase.

Also, in picking a laptop, especially from the 800 - 1000 dollar range, you can expect that that machine will not be able to game very well. Laptops are generally more costly than desktops as we sacrifice price for portability. New laptop tech is coming soon, as the mobile pentium M dual core and mobile AMD Turion dual cores are coming out soon, ( maybe mid 2006 ) as well as the new Ati (x1400, x1600 gpus) and nvidia ( 7400, 7600 gpus) are coming out.

As always, because of laptops inability to be very upgradable, you need to have a reason for purchasing a laptop. Do you want a laptop because it is a necessity for your friend right now? or does he just want one to just have one? The best time to buy a laptop, is if you absolutely need it because tech always gets outdated fast.

I hope i helped you even a little
good luck and have a great time learning,

ben

Thanks for the help man =).

Yea well my buddy is leaving the country in a few months and he wanted a laptop to use. Thats mainly the reason, also i appreciate your advice on buying when you need it. Since you can save some cost with computer pricing going up and down.

I also was thinking about traveling outside of the country but decided on getting a Small Form Factor regular computer than a laptop. I can take that with me to my destination. I might have to rebuy a monitor, but the way I figured it, if it costs me $600 for my computer and $300 for a new monitor, I'm still getting more power than if I had paid for a $900 laptop.

A laptop would be more portable and simpler than an SFF case, though, and you'd be able to use it the instant you got off the plane.

So... yeah.

It's been around for over a year, so it's not terribly new, but you're welcome all the same. :)
