Hi All,

I want to build a host machine for my office. Something that will hold about 5~10 VMs with 12 ~16 GB each, depending on what makes more sense financially, I might consider getting two instead of 1.

How do I go about researching this?

I've created a Hyper-V server with 24GB of ram and a quad core CPU, but this is basically a desktop machine running hyper-v server 2016.

The machines will be used for prototyping purposes, so no need for production-type hardware, we use AWS for that.

Any pointers-ideas are welcome.
 
Something like this http://www.natex.us/Intel-S2600CP2J-Motherboard-Kit-p/s2600cp-sr0h8-128gb-12800.htm put in to a proper case (SSI-EEB board) would make a great hyper-v machine. The processors are the first rev of the v1 and can be iffy if trying to do passthrough (which hyper-v does not do). This one http://www.natex.us/Intel-S2600CP-Motherboard-Package-Deal-p/intel-s2600cp2j-128gb.htm has the 2nd rev of the processor but is a bunch more $. 128GB would take you a long way.

I have purchased a few of these combos from them and have had no issues. If you pair them with a Intel P4000m chassis they can be nice quiet servers. There is a seller on ebay that has the chassis BNIB for best offer and routinely takes 1/2 or less of what they are up there for.

I got http://www.ebay.com/itm/181403407621 for $105+ shipping.

I ended up getting a board that natex had on ebay with 2 e5-2665 and 64gb ram for $378. By the time I got the chassis, io shield, intel heatsinks and shroud I was in to it for under $600. The case I got has 16 2.5" drive bays if you look you can find them with 8 3.5 or 4 3.5.

Dell R710's are cheap on ebay. Get two for redundancy. the OS will probably cost more than the two servers...
