advice for HTPC setup

Hey all. i'm going to be building a HTPC, to utilize parts i already own, and am trying to decide which way to go. i have an old socket 939 setup that i could drop right in to the case, add video card, and go, but i don't know how well it will do, for HTPC use. here's a link to the CPU-Z validation for it...

now, on the other hand, i have a Sempron 145 that i bought to test a motherboard that's just sitting around, that i've thought about buying an ATX board, video card, and memory for, since it's a little newer (and may possibly unlock into a dual core)

which system would be more suitable for HTPC use? i already have a case that only takes ATX boards, and i'll be getting a new CPU cooler for either build. what are your guys' recommendations? thanks!

What case and PSU are you planning on reusing?
What exactly are you planning on doing with this HTPC?
 
it's a d.vine 5 case that i recieved from a user on here. it uses an SFX sized PSU. i'm either going to hold out for the Silverstone modular ST45SF, or similar 400w SFX PSU. ideally, it's going to run XBMCbuntu, or some variation of linux with XBMC installed
 
Well here's the deal: IIRC, some of the older Nvidia motherboards for AMD CPUs don't work all that well with newer video cards. With that said, since both potential HTPC setups will basically require a new GPU, reuse that old 939 setup and plop in this GPU and see if it works:

If it doesn't work with your old 939 setup, then pickup a new mobo and RAM for that Sempron. This mobo and RAM should do the trick:

$20 - G.Skill F3-10666CL9S-2GBNT 4GB DDR3 1333 RAM
 
is there any particular reason for that video card, over any other variety? i was thinking of a PNY GT 430, because i know it has bitstreaming capabilities.

Cheapest HD 6570 I could find. That and its gaming performance is significantly higher than that of the GT430. And yes the HD 6570 does have bitstream capability as well.
 
Very overkill for HTPC duty but still good for a HTPC.
