Hi all,

Right now my E2180 is at 3.6 but it still cannot drive my 4850's.

What would be a sensible upgrade..?
I was thinking "screw it" and then just go for Q9650 but that costs a lot.
I was eyeing Q9400 but then having a 8GB of 800 RAM I don't think I can push my RAM too much.

I can just go E8500 or even the E7xxx but then now I am stuck in the marginal upgrade dilemma, and I would like to go the Quad route if it makes sense. Of course, the main purpose of this rig is gaming, but I don't know if getting a Dual core at this point in time would be a worthier investment than getting a Quad... Wondering if a Q9xxx at 3.2-3.4 is enough to drive the 4850s...

Q9400 would be plenty to push those 4850's. But in all honesty a Q9550 would be a better choice.
 
I also have a 2180 but I don't want to threadjack.

But I experience slow downs as well running at 3.0 and Vista 32bit.

Mouse freezes up on me at times and this is with 4 gigs on ddr2 ram, I'm thinking I need to get another processor as well.
 
Wow. What did you do get your e2180 up to 3.6GHz?

Mine won't go past 3.1GHz
 
I would go with a Q9400 or a Q9550. The Q9400 offers more value IMO, but the larger cache and higher multiplier of the Q9550 make it a good buy as well.
 
I myself went from a E2180 @ 3GHz to my Q9550, I would NEVER look back and feel the money was very well spent.

It is noticeably slower compared to a higher-clocked dual or quad-core CPU in processor-intensive tasks, and also in certain games. It really depends on how it is used, but there are certainly many scenarios in which an E2180 running at 3GHz could be considered as slow.
 
Could you name a few task in which a 2180 running at 3ghz would be slow? I use a program called convertxtodvd and it takes a while to convert a movie.

If I get a e5200, how much faster would this be over a 2180?

Or a quad running at 3.0ghz

Well if your encoding your better off with a quad than a dual core.

An E5200 overclocked to 3.6GHz or so would probably be around 1.5 times as fast at converting video. However, a quad-core would be significantly faster than even the E5200 providing the encoding program can take advantage of multiple cores, so if you're big on doing that sort of thing, it would be better to go with a quad.
 
To the op yes if encoding is your thing then go quad, however if gaming is more important I would go with the 8xxx series. In gaming your e2180 @ 3.6 is about equal to a 8xxx cpu at 3ghz from the benchmark results I've seen.

I just pumped the vcore to 1.54 effective. Runs at 3.6 fine, been like that for over 3 months I think?

anyway... I lost the battle and went out and bought a Q9650... it was CAD$40 more than a Q9550...

Hope I can do 4GHz no problem with this RAM (fingers crossed)

I`ve got the same problem as DTN107. I`ll try setup higher voltage, maybe it`ll work. Can U tell me how hot is 2180 @3.6?
 
The max tech voltage is 1.45V, You can easly do more if its very well cooled.

As for the op, i would say Q9400, I am not familar with Asus boards, but like i said tons of times, if its anything like gigabytes fsb strap options, keeping your ram at its rated speeds is nothing more than an option away.
 
I was trying @1,3v max, so i think it`s time to check higher voltz. Wish i have NF4 Ultra-D bios in here.
 
Yep a E2160/2180 is a little gem for average computing and some gaming but it won't drive those bad boys and you will notice it going to a bigger bad boy. :D
