Hello everyone.

Id like to know your opinion about the following vga box:

My idea is to connect my ps2 to my computer monitor (Crt 19'' Samsung 997mb), but im a bit afraid about the image quality, so id like opinions about how these vga boxs workout in the end.

P.S.: The reason i want to connect my ps2 to my monitor is that my tv fried, and so, im saving to buy an hdtv, but it will take sometime to get the money for it, so in the meantime, i wanted to use the monitor for the ps2 and i can get this relatively cheap.

Any VGA box will look crappy. The reason why is you're taking a 480x720 image (I believe that's the typical TV resolution) and blowing it up to fit your monitor. You'll get color-washout and blurriness. The exception to this rule was the VGA box for the dreamcast, but that actually allowed the DC to output a higher-res image. The box you're looking at will just upconvert, much like watching standard definition TV on a HDTV - not so good.

I'd recommend a TV add-in card. Will allow you to connect with the S-video or PS2 component cables (depending on the card) and since you can custom size the picture on your computer, it will look better. Check newegg or zipzoomfly and you should be able to find a fairly inexpensive one.

Component to VGA transcoders like x2vga look really good, but they usually can't do 480i because most monitors won't do 480i. This is a problem for the PS2 because not all the games support 480p with component cables. If you just using RCA you can get a cheap device like adaptec's game bridge which is like $15-25 depending on the version you get. Its a usb device so you can also record video from it, but the quality won't look that good. Any S-cable or composite cable won't look that good on a computer monitor because the 720x480i video needs to be line doubled which adds to the blurriness and then stretched to the monitors resolution which is a lot higher.

Thanks for the replies. Gonna look into that suggestion of the tv-add in card.
