How much of an upgrade would it be to go from a XFX 5870 XXX edition to the 6970?
It really depends on the resolution, but the 6970 is around 15% (or slightly less) faster than a stock 5870 on average.
If I had a 5870 now, I wouldn't buy a 6970. But that's just me.

Something like this:

Well games that run bad on the 5870, will do so on the 6970 to.... cant see why Amd released the 69xx serie.:(

Maybe it's cheaper to manufacture?
I don't know. At the very least, people don't like buying 1+ year old cards which are still the 'newest' things the companies have.

Huh? We did see some impressive gains in games the 5870 was struggling, like StalkerCoP and Metro2033. Don't get me wrong, I'm not happy with the 69xx series either, but they did fix some of the 58xx series' weaker points. And CFX scaling, at least for two cards, is now practically beating SLI, another decent achievement.

Just doesn't seem worth it, to be honest. For us 5870 owners running Eyefinity, is it worth spending another $400 to gain 20% ? Lets say WoW at 5760x1200res, on Ultra max settings w/ 8xAA, I get 40fps in huge outdoor Cataclysm zones, now I will get 48fps with a 6970

I find it really hard to understand people with 5870's and 480s going to a 6970.. grats on your 5-10% increase for 350+..

My 5850 just sold for $180 . so for $190 i'm getting a huge improvement. Look at eyefinity benchmarks . In most games i will almost double my performance.

yeah like the post above mine said, the big deal is at high resolutions where that 2GB vram comes into play. the 1gb on (almost all) 5870s and the 1.5gb on 480s can be very limiting.

I had a radeon 5850 so keep that in mind and run 570x1080

Battle forge

i go from 16-17fps to 25fps or so however at 4800x900 i go from 22ish up to 32 or basicly playable frames.

Dirt 2 is a much bigger deal I go from 30fps or 35fps depending on which res up to 42/52 respectivly

Farcry 2 is amazing

I go from 32 and 38 up to 58 and 74 . The 6970 is actual faster here than the 5970... the ram is a huge factor in this game.

I could keep going but you get the point.

The 2 gigs of ram helps alot and makes the case for alot of users. At higher resolutions the 6950 is ahead of the 5870 and 6870 and the 6970 closes the gap or out performs the 5970

I pointed out battleforge to my buddy. At 5760x1080 upgrading to a single 6970 is actual faster than getting a second 5850 and is faster than a 5970.

These cards are the real deal in alot of situations and a worthy upgrade. If your just looking at lower resolutions I'd understand but i'm not sure if we should even be testing at 1680x1050 anymore. Imo it should be 1920x1200 and up. A review isn't complete unless it now has multi monitor gaming.

THe hardocp review was good and I know they were stressed for time so they didn't do eyefinity yet , however it doesn't give a clear picture of what happens in higher resolutions were the 6970 is clearly 20-30% faster than even the 2gig 5870

A 5850 for that resolution was a bad buy in the first place.. im talking about people with single monitors 20-24's that are upgrading from 5870's to 470-480's to 69XX.. theres almost no reason other than to waste $.

I love the HDMI out on my HD6970, all the little fuzziness I had with the DVI adapter on the lcdtv are just gone now. Crystal clear Win7 Desktop is something to behold. All in all, quite a nice upgrade from my HD4890, its literally doubled my frame rates. WoW is totally pegged at 60 FPS vsync and 1920x1080 and my whole system feels like a new rig. Not a bad upgrade for $399 spent, really... I finally have the card I wish I had when I bought the HD4890 and the HD5870 came out a few months later.

The 5850 was a great purchase for that resolution.

See the 5850 was brought as a bridge card. I bought it in january of this year and played with a single monitor for a very long time and then when i upgraded my monitors for eyefinity it allowed me to see if i liked it before investing more.

I'm extremely happy with my 5850 but for sw tor i know i will need more power and I don't want a situation where these cards go up in price like earlier last gen

You may be right about single monitor users. However we really don't know how future games will be with 1GB vram pools. It might be wise to make the small jump now . It may end up being smart to stick with the older cards if they are working well for you
