Not sure what's wrong, but converting hundreds of RAW images get my rig down. All cores are up to 100% and the music starts lagging as well as the mouse. I don't like this at all. Is this the time to up my hardware?

Could be. Doing some Google-fu it seems pretty common, although kind of hard to tell whether it's the processor or the program. I'm sure converting hundreds of RAW images will put your CPU to work and if it's red lining at 100% that would explain the system slow down.

What is your RAM use like doing this? If your entire system is getting bogged down it could be using Virtual Memory. People are having reports via Google with 16GB of RAM doing the same thing as you and it completely decimating their system.

I'd try doing some smaller batch jobs and see if it returns any better performance (25 then maybe 50, etc.). There is no solid answer from what I can tell since people are having the same issues. I know just converting a few big RAW files in Adobe kicks my Q9550 in the balls for about 10-20 seconds. Could just be the applications own weight though, it really is hard to tell when you're working with multimedia and Adobe products.

Here's an example of what I'm reading:

With the price of ram being as cheap as it is, I would grab a 32GB kit, which would be a HUGE improvement over the current 8GB you have now..It seems that you are running out of ram and the OS is thrashing whichever drive you are using as it's scratch disk..

If you do not have it setup this way already, I would dedicate the Intel X-25 80GB SSD you have as a scratch drive solely for Lightroom's use..This should make things a good bit better.

The rig in your sig? Thats much better than my LR PC. Im on a C2Q@3.3, 8gb ram and my LightRoom experience is good.

Sounds to me like its disk IO. What drive is your OS on, what drive is LR on. LR isnt hard on the drives, but it is good to give it its own drive. I played around like all sorts of configs between SSD, 10k VR's, 2tb Black and 2tb Green. and I ended up putting everything for LR on a 2tb Green Raid 1 array. Its not any slower than on a SSD. Alot of peeps keep them on fast external USB3, FW800, or eSATA so they can move from PC to PC with it. it works well.

But NO, when im exporting my images to JPG (converting them from raw) I just minimize and go about my business my PC doesn't really slow down. Yea it uses alot of CPU, but not to the point of music dropping out. I agree with above, check you ram usage, but I dont think thats the problem unless you have something else using it. I can only RUN LR, and can get it to max out my 8gb.... I tried. about 5 was all I got. The brush eats he ram up, but only when using it, by the time your exporting its all free again.

Ok, now its really pissing me off. Seems like my OCed 4.7Ghz Sandy isn't cutting anymore. It gets pretty choppy zooming in and out, going through the pics. My workflow is on the SSD disk.

I recently got to play with a Dual 6 core Xeon rig, 32gb ram, Quadro k5000, 256gb 840 pro ssd for the OS and Lightroom on a second 512gb 840pro ssd. (Along with a SAS 15k RAID5 array, wasn't being used)

I can tell you that zooming in and out was still a bit laggy. A little better than my core2 quad at home, but not much. Dont beat yourself up, LR is just a bit fat. :)

i7 SB, lightroom on a SSD... thats as good as your gonna get really, read up on keeping your library optimized, and performance tips. I found some to help, others to not. stop zoom in and out so much :) less pixel peeping more sharing!
