Hello all,

A friend from work has encountered a problem with here windows computer and asked me to check it out. She has a BSOD on boot, i am now trying to see if we can repair the install, with a windows xp disk, but i am asked for the administrator password, we don't know what it is, is there away to bypass it to repair the windows install?

try leaving the admin password empty, some people don´t put the admin password

assuming it is not a hardware problem, I´d recommend to u to reinstall everything, (format and reinstall) write down the network configuration before u erase anything
 
how about booting into safe mode and doing a system restore or do a "last known good" option instead of blindly whacking the install?:confused:
 
Doing a repair just basically reinstalls the OS system files. It leaves the data and programs intact.
If you can do a full reinstall then that will be best for performance but if you dont care about that then a repair should suit you
 
That is what i was attempting to do, because it would not boot into windows. It would get to the blue bar with the windows xp logo, then hit the blue screen.

so i repaired it, started into safe mode via msconfig, now it messed up again, and i can't get into safe mode, it will go to the page where you can choose between admin account or the owner account, but it never fully loads the windows it just goes to a black screen and it is just about to drive me crazy.

any ideas?
 
Run the recovery console to get to a C:\ prompt and type in: chkdsk /r. If this doesn't fix it then you can try installing Windows again with the repair option. If that fails you will need to format and do a clean install.

can't get there from here, it just keeps saying that windows can't be setup in safemode. almosty like a loop, it will reboot and then give the same message. I can't get to the recovery mode, i am gonna throw the drive in my computer and see if i can get it going.

You don't need to run those commands inside Windows... you boot from the CD and then run them.

Chances are sticking the drive into another PC won't work- as it is setup for the drivers used in the current machine. And since that seems to be your problem... won't do much good.
 
The problem is that it is stuck in a loop, i can't get the computer out of safe mode, so i insert the xp disc to try to get to recovery mode, but because it is in safe mode, it wants to restart, because you cant get to recovery mode in safe mode, or windows can't install the files that are needed for recovery mode.

even if i F8 it won't start in any mode except safe mode, thus continuing the loop.

i want to put it in another computer to scan it for trojans... they are there but i cant scan it in this computer because of the current problems.

any thoughts

Boot from the XP disc....
 
that is what i am doing, booting from the xp disk, but the routine is stuck in safe mode.

I'm going to assume you don't have a bad harddrive, but use bart pe. Use the emergency recovery option, from there you can load a windows restore points or fix the registry.

where is the emergency recovery option?

i have burned the disc but can't find this option in the interface.
 
I checked my work discs. Its called Super PE which is based on Bart PE. I didn't see a link that wasn't a sketchy torrent site. So you are on your own finding a source for it.
