Adjusting Gain or Offset?

When I use my spyder 4 pro I usual only adjust the GAIN for RGB. Am I supposed to adjust the OFFSET as well? Or is it the other way around?
 
Gain is a multiplier.
Offset changes the min start value, it adds/subtracts a static value from everything.

For example, if blacks arent black enough yet everything else seems ok, you may need to reduce the offset and increase the gain to compensate.
