Adding TOSLINK (optical in) to a setup

I have a fairly dated mobo (about 3 or 4 years old). I has a SPDIF coaxial and optical outs, but no ins. Now, I have a 360 and want to connect it optically.
My question is as follows

Can I buy an optical in (TOSLINK) header and connect it to a spare USB pin head, or does it have to connect to a specified optical pin head?

Many thanks

If you have a coaxial digital input, there are converters you can buy, but otherwise, you need a soundcard. Look at your mainboard's manual, there's sometimes a separate header on it for the digital input.
