Adding to raid array, purchasing identical hard drive worth it?

Right now I have 4, WD 500 RE2 raid edition drives, and I want to expand my storage. Right now the RE2 drive is going for about 150 online, while other 500gb sata drives are going for as low as 100 bucks. Is there a disadvantage to going with some other sata drive?

It won't be fun if you buy one of the other, cheaper drives and they're just a little smaller than the drives you already have in the array. Spend the extra money for peace-of-mind.

They should all be 465 GB formatted, AFAIK.

That said, I would still get all similar drives, rather than mixing and matching. Either that, or I'd start building another array for more space.

Keep to the RE2s since that is what you have purchased, plus from what I have read, they are better for RAIDing anyways. Wish they had those out when I first started my RAID... oh well

I would stick to the same drives.

FYI, 750gb drives are now 179 free ship and 500's are now 89 free ship ;) Just wanted to tease you :D

Since this is a RAID array, go with the RE drives. You won't have to worry about a drive falling from the array and you getting errors on why (well, less worry anyway).
