Hello i have an msi ge70 laptop with 1 8gb ddr3-1600 pc12800. I would like to add another 8gb stick. my question is: does using sticks with diff cas latency/voltage matter? my current stick has Cas latency 11 and 1.5v

Now my 2 options for second stick
First option : CL latency 11 1.35v
second option : CL latency 10 1.5v

and they are both ddr3-1600 pc12800

would appreciate some input
thanks in advance

AIUI if the timings are different then the bios should just run things at the slower timings and everything should work fine.

Voltage wise I belive that 1.35V ram can usually also operate at 1.5V so again should work ok.

So I think either stick should work fine but I don't do this stuff every day so might be worth waiting for input from someone with more experiance.

thanks for your reply. and i've been getting mixed replies/results when searching this topic.

I've seen others say what you've just said above. and then others saying mixing voltages is worst thing you can do... for CAS latency people have mentioned some will automatically run at the slower latency or you might have to manually adjust that.

I'd be very wary indeed of mixing. Try to get an exact match or swap out the existing DIMM.

I've tried mixing DDR3 before. Even manually setting the timings didn't work. Upping the voltage didn't work. Loosening up the timings a lot didn't work.

The one thing about DDR3 is that the sub timings can be quite different, and you are going to be very lucky if you can get two different sticks that will run at the same exact timings.

If I were you, I would make sure and get two of the same exact sticks.

I went ahead and bought 2x8gb of the same stick to avoid any hassles/problems. thanks for the help :)
