My plans have changed several times, but I think I have decided that instead of building a new file server, I will use a current server and add 2x 500GB disks in a mirrored array for network storage.

The server is running Debian Linux 3.1, with everything on a single 80GB IDE drive. What I would like to do is create a mirrored array (500GB in size) out of the two new SATA disks, and mount them under /var/shared, or something similar. I will be following this web page:

http://linas.org/linux/raid.html

So I think I am all set as far as creating the array, but I am wondering if there is anything that I should look out for.

I would suggest using mdadm over that guide. It is much easier to use, as you wont have to mess around with raidtab, or anything similar. But either way you choose to go, be prepeared to try it two or three times before you get it right.

Since I mostly use Debian based distributions, I found the above article helpful. I answered most of my questions, and it seems like it is a good resource for adding RAID to an existing Linux system. You should not have to recompile the kernel with RAID support, just do "apt-get install mdadm".

The hard drives were ordered tonight, so they should be here by Monday or Tuesday.
