Adding New Memory to my System

I am thinking about jumping from 1GB to 2GBs of memory. As my sig says, I have a Neo2 Platinum based board. I was curious that if I decide to hookup my system with another 1GB, will my pc read it upon my next bootup, or will I have to configure the new memory in Windows, BIOS, etc.? Or can I just plug it in and be ready to go?

Thank You

be aware that a64's don't like 4 sticks of ram

you'll definitly have to drop the command rate to 2T, which is a 10-15% latency hit, and in some cases, scale the ram clock back to 166mhz, making things even worse

Hmmm, interesting. If I did decide to go with another 1GB would I run the risk of frying my CPU? Would this actually cause my system to lag instead of running more efficient? I really don't know much about memory, especially anything in regards to over or under clocking....

nah, it won't cause any harm, just a small performance hit in programs that don't take advantage of the extra ram space

Oh well that's at least good to hear. You wouldn't by chance know some of these programs? I really don't use too many memory extensive programs except for video games, mainly Hl2, Doom 3, and Matrix Online. The only other memory extensive programs I can think of are Napster, Jukebox, and DVD X Copy.

"intensive" ;)

and none of those really need more than 1gb.. i could understand if you were a BF2, WoW, or Guild Wars player.. or work with extremely large databases, or lots of image rendering... but that's typical stuff, you should even be ok with 512mb :D (though HL2 and doom3 might load a bit slower)

MMOs in general are memory hogs, and PS sucks it up.

(cf)Eclipse!! How could you say that 512mb is sufficient for HL2. Actually it hampers performance, and reduces any # that your hardware could actually hit...

BTW: Napster and Jukebox aren't exactly "intensive" programs by any measure.

Oh, and (cf)Eclipse, when I tested the ram last night I had an HTT of 230, and a ram divider of 150... I don't feel like calculating the final ram speed, so feel free. :) I'm guessing about DDR320...

I upgraded from 1 to 2 gigs of RAM on my K8N Neo2 this week. It has not worked out well. I've got 4 sticks of 512meg OCZ 3200 Platinum Revision 2. The RAM was recognised fine, worked fine within Windows and I thought everything was rosey.

Then I was playing both GTA San Andreas and Unreal Tournament 2004 and both games just hang, the screen and mouse freezes and a beeping sound comes out of the speakers. I have to reset.

Upon removing the two new sticks of RAM I no longer had this problem, I've done various tests and the new RAM isn't faulty. So having the 4 DIMM slots filled was the cause.

I've already made a topic about this here: http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=913677

On the official MSI forum I found other people who had quite a few problems with 4 DIMMs on the Neo2: http://forum.msi.com.tw/index.php?board=28.0

Take a look before you make a decision Z(+)DIAC. Hopefully you'll have better luck.

PS - as (cf)Eclipse pointed out, you will have to reduce the clock speed to 166mhz. Take a look at the mobo manual, it explains it in there.

Wow, thanks again for all the help everyone. I truly do appreciate all the advice. Now that I think about it, I doubt I will go with another 1GB. I really don't experience much lag and slow downs with any current problems. The only reason I was considering another 1GB is that I could get it for cheap.

Thanks again.
