Just wondering if it can be done.

In one of my servers, it has 5 harddrives. Is it possible to make/add in 4 other new leds and wire it to show the activity when those other drives are accessed?

appreciate the link....but looking for more something I can do myself and not just buy and hook up. No fun in just hooking up pre-modded stuffs.....

unlikely because you'll need a device that can listen in on the ide channels and know whats going on.

Try a search (google, not here) on modding IDE pin 39 (or 38, I forget which). I've seen people do it here before. If I remember right, pin/line 39 on the IDE cable carries HDD activity. You have to splice into that. I don't know if that gives you both HDD activity per chain at once, or if you can read each drive independantly from each other by doing two splices, one before and one after the slave connect.

Someone has to have pictures somewhere.

Edit: found it!

this is your solution. i couldnt remember the pin # :p

Doubt it will work for sata you need the ide interface for it.

But something I have always wondered is what those extra pins on some hard drives are for. I know they arent for the master/slave thing.. perhaps for activity indication also?

most likely supar sekret interface that the manufacture uses to do things to it when its broken or something.

splicing the IDE cable is the only way ..........

edit: but I'll be willing to put money on if we got some big names in the modding circles to pressure hard drive makers that they could put some LED headers on the drives just like mobo's have them.
