Has anyone had any success adding some sort of usb to hdmi adapter to an Asus eeepc 701?

Or is the usb throughput not enough? Could I run it at 720?
Also will it work on linux?

Wow, total blast from the past.

What were you hoping to achieve? Hook it up to an HDTV for some video streaming?

I've seen USB 2.0 video adapters in action, and they're laggy.

If you just need a small portable PC to hook to an HDTV, you might be better off putting the money you would have spent on an adapter towards a cheap Windows tablet that has HDMI output, such as this WinBook TW700 for $60. Yup, $60 gets you a 7" tablet with a quad core CPU (Bay Trail based Atom) running full blown Windows 8.1 and a micro HDMI output.

It also includes a 1 year subscription (key is included in box) to Office 365 Personal, which sells on Amazon for $60. I see it on eBay buy-it-now for around $25-30, so potentially you can offload it.

If your TV/display has HDMI, but not a VGA D-SUB connection, you could probably try using an active VGA to HDMI converter. Ones with 3.5mm audio input are usually under $20 (not sure how well they actually work, though). Also, I'm not 100% sure what the max external resolution for the 701 is, but on my 900HA (connected directly), I'm thinking it was either 1024x600 or 1024x768 which actually looked okay when the TV upscaled video to 1080 (desktop and text not so much).

But for only $60, I think Zap's suggestion is a much better solution.

I forgot I wrote this,

I was just hoping I might be able to use a usb to hdmi connector with linux, not so much to watch bluray quality movies but just to have hdmi for desktop use for example.

I was wondering if anyone could confirm that it works / doesn't work.

There are a lot of cheap ones but I think they are for smartphones so they probably won't work.
