Adding fans to a hub/switch

I have a switch that is overheating causing all connections to drop out. I was wondering if anyone has added a fan or a cooling solution to a hub/switch before? It doesn't seem that hard of job, although I'm not sure how the fan would get power.

Any info is appreciated.
 
Keep in mind that most home switches/hubs use 5 volts. So wiring a fan directly to your switch probably won't work.
 
yea, i dunno how you would get power to the fan, you could always crack the case off it and throw a heatsink on the overheating chip.
 
There are some small 40-60mm fans that run OK at 5v. Put a small HS on the chips, and put a fan in the case. I've never seen one overheat though, and considering how cheap small hubs/switches sre you might just be better off forking out for a new one.
 
Thanks for the help guys. I'll do a little more research into it and see what comes up. I'll probably end up buying a whole new switch, but I figured it would be worth a shot to see if it's ever been done before. I think it would be pretty [h]ard to have a cheapo D-Link switch with an active cooling solution.
 
my older linksys hub actually has sinks on them already. I have a dlink that does not and overheats like you mention. I cut up an old 3/486 sink and slapped it on there and they get BURNING hot. I took mine out of the casing though..
 
I wish I would have done this to my Linksys broadband router.
It baked itself last saturday.
The metal on the ports was hot to the touch.
Bad thing is that i have a 60 mm fan sitting on the shelf next to it that I could have just screwwed to the top.
