Adding extra sata ports/hdds question

Hey guys,

I've been searching for an answer for this question, don't really know how to word it.

ATM I'm using onboard Sata ports to fill my file server in a raid 5 config. However, I no longer have any more slots. If I want to add more slots using the intel raid (or any raid for that matter in case I upgrade to a hardware raid card) can I just buy a pci-e sata card (ie: 4port sata 3.0 pci-e card) and then add additional drives to the raid?

First, I have limited experience configuring hardware raid cards and would not claim to be a hardware raid card expert.

In my experience, it has always seemed that hardware raid, and motherboard raid are tied to the physical ports. If you have an Intel motherboard raid array and have used up all the slots, you cannot buy just any 'ole Sata port card and add to that array.

For example, when I go into my Intel raid array config on boot up, it only sees the drives connected to the intel motherboard ports. It does not see any drives connected to the other ports on the motherboard, nor does it see the ports on my HighPoint Rocket card. Same when I go into the HighPoint card array, it only sees drives connected to it.

I think there are hardware cards that will work together to run a single array, but I would guess that they not only have to be of the same brand, but at least the same series of card and maybe even the same model. I'm not aware of a card that would allow you expand an intel motherboard array.

Hopefully someone who is more hardware raid savy than I will chime in and add additional clarification for you.

It's hard to tell, but from what some of these guys are saying the harddrives wont show up on other raid arrays when its on a differnet device.. though maybe add on cards are different.

You are right. I had to move the my OS drive off the onboard controller in order to expand my raid. :(
