I'm thinking of buying a Lenovo X230 laptop. The SSDs they offer, however, max out at 128GB which is way too small for me. Since the X230 comes with an ExpressCard slot, however, I was thinking of ordering it with a 500GB HDD for my data and adding an ExpressCard SSD for my apps and OS (Win7 x64). Any thoughts on this approach? Pros, cons, recommended SSDs? Thanks.
 
Did you consider buying the much cheaper hdd models and replacing the hdd by an ssd yourself? The ssd models are way to expensive in my opinion. If you don't need a WWAN adapter, you can also use a mSATA ssd in its slot, although only at SATA2 speeds as far as I know.
 
That's a good idea, om, except I need at least 500GB total storage, and the SSDs at that capacity run $300 - $800. The 500GB HDD configured X230 is only $40 more than the 320GB (cheapest) version. I can get an 128GB SSD ExpressCard for ~$250. I hadn't considered the WWAN slot (not using the adapter). How do you know it's mSATA? Where would I find the physical and other specs for it?
 
Since I can buy an X230 preinstalled with a 500 GB hdd and a 256 GB Crucial m4 here, I'm quite sure the X230 can accept a full-size mSATA drive in its WWAN slot. If you need more information on installing the SSD you can consult the X230 hardware maintenance manual. The main drawback is that the mSATA slot is limited to SATA 3Gb/s speeds.
 
Also, any issues setting up the Crucial as a boot drive? Does the BIOS permit it or did you need a workaround?
