adding additional storage to VMware server.

built a HTPC and install vmware server to run FreeNAS as my backup system.


created a datastore in main console.

i go to add hardware.
hard drive
point it at the second drive, but asks for a VMDK file...

I just want to add another 1 tb drive to this thing.... why is it so hard :(

is the limit for a VM 2 TBs?... ive been reading stuff, and thats what it seems to be....

Indeed it is. You can't have a single data store over 2TB, even with ESX Enterprise.
 
can you walk me through adding an additional datastore to a VM thats just going to be for data storage?

everytime i try to add an extra disk to FreeNAS it asks me to point it to a VMDK file.
 
You can not add a physical disk to a ESXi vm all data has to be vdmk files
 
I am glad that I read this thread. I am going to a 3TB array but I will make sure that I do 1 3 TBs or 1 1TB and 1 2TB array.
 
To follow these directions you will first have to add your new Disk as a new data store

Shut down your VM
Select your VM and click edit settings
Then Click Add
this will give you a list of hardware you can add to your VM
Select hard drive
Enter the amount of space
Select the name of the data store that you gave to your new drive
Click threw the rest of the wizard


Should work for you.
