Trying to get real temp to start when windows start but I'm not able to get it to do that. I dropped the shortcut in the startup folder by doing a windows + r and entering shell:Startup (which takes you to the start up folder) but I can't get it to start when windows starts

Try adding to the All Users startup? Not that it should make a difference
C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\StartUp

This is the best way in that it's the most equivalent to what you would do on Win7

The task scheduler approach would also work in Windows 7. Many top tier developers use it for automating tasks, Adobe, Google, Apple, etc. as it's been in Windows since XP in it's current form.

Use Task Scheduler and create a basic task to start when the computer starts.

This is how I do mine with Windows 10. I'm not sure the startup folder is even used anymore.

This is also how you have to do it if you want the program to execute with admin rights and still be protected (as you have to enter an admin password to change the parameters).
