Hey guys. I have never had this issue before. So please bear with me....

So I have this MoBo. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131620

OK, So I was running 2x 2GB DDR3 1600 OCZ Chips and I decided to buy 2 more so I could run 8GB RAM. When I installed the 2 new chips, my computer was no longer stable in Prime95.

I rebooted and ram Memtest86 from a boot CD and let it run for about 12 hours. No errors and everything is A-OK(this is with the 8GB installed) I don't get it. I didn't change anything, just added RAM. I tried upping the voltage on the cpu from 1.3250 all the way to 1.5250. It helped a little, but it did not take care of the crashes. I don't want to add more voltage because the chip runs too hot, plus I am prime stable for like 7 days when I have only 4GB in the system.

So I pulled the two new chips, and everything is fine. tested the new chips in the system by themselves and system runs OK.

Check sig for system specs. Any advice would be much appreciated.
 
problem isn't your CPU obiously so don't bother upping that voltage.

4 sticks is generally less stable then 2 sticks. I'd say up the voltage to your ram and or chipset before touching your processor.

Also prime 95 is much more aggressive and sensitive to errors than pretty much anything.

My old Q6600 would run stable stable stable everything at 3.8Ghz but wouldn't do prime95 stable at anything more than about 3.3Ghz. That says something about the effectiveness of prime95 testing true stabilitiy.
 
problem is likely that you have vt-d enabled in BIOS. there's a few boards out there that when all RAM slots are populated and vt-d is enabled, they freak the fuck out. try turning off the intel virtualization options in BIOS and see where that gets you.
 
imho the more ram sticks you use the more you have to slow the memory down.
This is really nothing new and has bin a given since even before 286 15mgz computers.

manually edit you memory timing and slow em down to the point of mega fail save mode then slowly tighten
em up till you find the sweet spot .
nm what the numbers are for the ram in question as well you can try and add +5% more voltage to the
memory in question.
Just be shore to do some heat tests on the ram in question under full load to
make shore its all good and nothing over heating if you decide use more volts.
Shouldn't need to really but what the hell hu :)

ya, you need to bump the voltage on some of the memory bus settings. I forget what they are called.
 
Thanks guys. I'm going to fool with it a little more and if I can't get it i'm going to ebay the RAM sticks and just buy two 4GB dimms.

What a PITA though, huh? One would think this would just work like it's supposed to. But I guess this is what happens when you mess around overclocking...... It's still worth the hassle though :)

You should see how much fun it was back in the 72pin dimm days with 8 memory sticks using a mixed bag of
{Dram vs parity dram vs none parity dram vs edo ram vs fake parity ram}
All mixed in to the same mobo with 20+ {100% all memory timings} full screen of options in the bios to play with ^_^

and you think you got it hard now ha!
