Adaptec Vs. Highpoint SATA RAID - Opinions?

Hi all..

I'm considering building a large fileserver using SATA disks (RAID 5). I am looking at two different controllers :-

- Adaptec 2810SA 8 Chan - £320

- Highpoint RR1820A 8 Chan - £150


The obvious difference is the cost, but could anyone clarify why the Adaptec is so much more expensive? I have a feeling the Adaptec supports hot-swap where the HighPoint one doesnt - but is that it? Neither seem to allow you to place extra cache ram on the board..

Adaptec is just an older name in the business, they make a damn fine product so they can charge a fair price for it. THe adaptec one will probably outlast the highpoint one by a long time.
 
They're both very good but the main difference is the fact the adaptec has a specialised processor on the board to take the load off the cpu. The highpoint is cheaper because it uses more CPU time.

They're both awesome, the adaptec IS better but it really depends. They'll both do the same job well so its a matter if you wanna fork out the extra to get the load of your cpu. If your running a file server that gets hammered and has a tonne of drives/users(and 1 cpu) then the adaptec is probably a better option. If you have a 2 cpu(or a less used system [such as a 1 cpu personal workstation]) system then the RR would be a good idea.

Basically, they'll do the same thing but the RR uses more CPU time to bring costs down but in a proper file-server the amount of cpu time it'd take would be minimal. I personally would get the 1820A because its cheaper and has gotten really awesome reviews.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I assumed. This is only for a huge home fileserver (single user+media centre), so CPU cost isn't really such a concern. -thanks
 
You asked for opinions, and I think Adaptec is the only RAID controller worth my cache. (That really was a real typo, I just left it -bedtime)
