I just bought an Adaptec 5805 with a BBU for my file server. I'm having some issues getting it to 'rebuild' an array it thinks is degraded. Here's the event sequence:

Connected 7 x 2TB drives
Created RAID-5 (initialization completed)
Added 1 x 2TB to array, expansion begins
Expansion reaches 22%
System rebooted
Boot alarm from RAID controller. Storage Manager says the array is degraded.

Here's where it gets weird.

The drive I added started an automatic 'Clear' cycle (where the whole drive is written with 0s) with a new progress meter. The progress meter for the expansion kept going as if nothing had happened.

After another thirty hours, both the Clear cycle and the progress meter for the original expansion completed. The array is still marked degraded. The Logical Device properties show it's missing a 'segment', which is to say, the eighth drive.

The eighth drive is showing as a new drive 'ready' to be used.

On the prompting of Adaptec's support documents, I set the drive to be a hot spare for the array on the assumption a rebuild would start. It hasn't.

What should I do next? I'd like to add the drive, expand the array, and clear the 'degraded' flag. Any thoughts are appreciated.
 
Rebooted again. Now the controller reports the 8th drive (the one that just had 2TB of 0s written to it) as failed. The array is now larger, so I guess I've got a regular degraded array. Re-adding the 8th drive will probably fix it.

EDIT: And did fix it. Rebuild took 6 hours.

TL;DR: Nevermind, thanks anyway.
