I need some advice..

Im running Raid 5 using 8 WD 2TB disks on my Adaptec 5805 using linux debian.

My raid device is now degraded, with 1 physical harddrive listed as state: Optimal, but contains failed logical segment (Storage Manager has the little yellow ! warning icon).

I cannot fix or verify anything (grayed out), should I re-initialize this disk and it would be able to start rebuilding or how can I proceed?

Which HD's are you running? Are they WD Green's? The reason you can't do anything is the card doesn't see any options. You would have to remove the failed drive (either replace or reformat) from the array and then add it back so it could rebuild the array. A few things... You of course do have a complete backup of the array, right? A rebuild is about the most stress you will put on the array, and due to murphys law the chance of a second drive going and taking your array with it are at their highest. Since that card is capable of RAID6, and if you have a full backup and can take the 2TB hit in space, I would strongly suggest going to RAID6 for the additional breathing room it can grant in case of failure..

Also, just for the hell of it if they are WD Greens (always recommend AGAINST greens when doing hardware RAID,) what is the Head Park number from SMART on the bad drive? I just did an array replacement for a customer that did a build-your-own with WD Greens and after a year had 1.45 Million head parks on some of the drives.

I'm not sure about the error as it seems odd to me that the drive would cause the array to be degraded and is labeled as failed (assuming the logical segment == this drive), but the drive is "Optimal" as well. I'd pull it out of the system and run the manufacturer's diagnostic tool (WD DLG) on it since the array is degraded anyways. Could you post your arcconf 'getconfig' output?

I have WD RE4 Disks sorry for not specifying.. Not greens.. Something similair has happended a few times before.. I just ordered some cheap Green harddrives for backup before I start messing with the array since I still can access it.

Thanks for responding, I will post full getconfig and smarttool info for each disk in 30mins-1hour.. have a few things to do.

StorMan Reports that the problem is channel 0, cable 3.

The stats on the "failed' drive seem ok. Since you have the drives on the way, I would make the backup as soon as possible, then remove the failed drive from the config, add it back to the array (whether as a member or as a spare I am not sure on with Adaptecs of late, check the docs) and let it rebuild.

mwroobel thanks for your input, I really appriciate it!

Will do so! :)

I agree with mwroobel. I don't see anything unusual which makes the error you received even more odd. Let us know how the rebuild goes.

Hmmm I tried initializing the disk (maybee should have used set to failed, instead dunno) but now when I add it as a hot spare nothing happens it dosent try to rebuild..

Only thing showing on the raid is segment 3 missing (the disk I initialized) and bad stripe under the array..

Its the third time I got the bad stripe warning.. Is there nothing I can do?

I mean my lvm2 software setup was WAY more stable than this hardware stuff.. Simply dont get it..

Guess thats the first and last time I get anything from Adaptec heh..

Hm firmware update helped.. It gave me the CTRL+R rebuild option in BIOS.. I was on 17544 .. So if anyone else has problems with ADAPTEC 5805 and rebuilding.. UPDATE YOUR FIRMWARE :)
