Adaptec 52445 question

Hello,

I have been reading about the limitation on the Adaptec 52445 controllers about how you can only have 16 drives when using RAID 6.

I was wondering if this is still going on or if they have removed this limitation.

Any feedback is much appreciated!

I don't know anything about that card in particular, but unless that card has a monster of a processor on board it probably starts to slow down from the overhead of more than 16 drives in RAID 6.

EDIT: Not to mention the odds of losing more than two disks at the same time are pretty high with an array that size.

hmm why would 24 port controller limit you to 16 drives ? I'm not familiar with adaptec but on my areca controllers (1280ML and 1680IX-24) I could run 20 drives in raid 6 no problem

As of now, the latest firmware/driver is dated August 1, and has the 16 drive limitation for raid6. I believe you can do more than 16 drives for other raid levels, but when you get to that many drives you wouldn't want to do anything other than raid6.

It may be addressed in a future update, but that's the situation now. You may want to get the Areca card instead, if you plan on having a really large raid6 array.

I would give Adaptec a call and verify this, curious that there'd be a sixteen-drive limit for a 24-port card.

16116 Firmware:
Raid5 - 32 drives
Raid6 - 16 drives

15738 Firmware:
Raid5 - 16 drives
Raid6 - 16 drives

Hello,

I have been reading about the limitation on the Adaptec 52445 controllers about how you can only have 16 drives when using RAID 6.

I noticed that as well. Kinda strange, but it appears to be correct.

Where is the Adaptec Rep? There should be one here at the forum.

Let me know what you buy and how it works out for you. I am looking at this card as well.

I ended up returning the Adaptec card and bought the Areca ARC-1680IX-24.

This card has been great so far I have 24x 1TB Seagate ES.2 drives in RAID 6 + 1 hot spare.

Getting 900MB/s+ reads and 750MB/s+ writes.
