Adaptec 2410SA RAID Card

Would the Adaptec 2410SA work in a 32bit/33Mhz PCI slot? The specs say that its a 64bit/66Mhz card but it also doesn't say that it wont work in a normal PCI slot.

Specifically I want to use it with an Abit NV-8 motherboard.
 
Yes, it'll work. However, that's not a great card speed-wise. For the same price you can get the far superior Highpoint 2220 or 2320. They're software based, but very efficient software - 300+ MB/s on a single Opteron 240. If you are willing to make a little hardware mod (cutting out the back of the x1 slot) you can even get the pci-e version for future compatibility.

Actually I plan on getting one of those cards off ebay for about half or amybe even a third of the cost of retail. Incredible speed isn't really necessary for what I'm gonna be using it for (media storage); if read and write speeds are comparable to a single drive, I'll be happy.

When you say the Highpoint card has very efficient software do you mean just those models? Would the 2300 (PCI Express x1) or 2310 (PCI Express x4) or 1820A be just as good?

Regarding cutting out the back of the x1 slot, do you mean cutting away the plastic rib at the end of the x1 slot so that any PCI Express card will fit in? Would that force a x4/x8/x16 card to run in x1? Personally I think cutting stuff out of a motherboard sounds like something you would read in a tech support nightmare site.
 
Buying the card for less than that price is the only way to go. It's not worth the $270 linked. Agreed, incredible speed isn't needed for media storage, but the online expansion capability of the Highpoint, and the fact that you can get 8 drives on it instead of 4 would tend to sway me.

All the recent Highpoint cards are nice speed-wise. The 1820 doesn't have expansion capability, but the 2220 and up all do from what I understand. The 2300 might be a good alternative, at $150ish, especially if you don't really want to modify the motherboard.

Cutting out the end of the slot is what you've described. All devices are required to support x1 mode, so it's not a problem logically speaking. It might make your board un-RMAable, but that's a risk you'll have to investigate further.

 
How about the Highpoint 2240? It looks like a decent card. Is it a software RAID card like or does it have an onboard XOR processor? Also can multiple RAID 5 arrays be set up on a single card? For example with this card can I set up 4x4HDD arrays or 2X8HDD arrays? I'd rather not have a single massive 16 drive array since if 1 drve fails the chance of another drive failing before I can rebuild would be much more likely than if I had less hard drives.
 
It's fast software raid, just like the 2220 and 2320. And you'll be able to build multiple small arrays on it, like you suggest.
