I've been seeing some acrylic cases hit the market and I was wondering what advantages they offer. Could anyone help me out here?
 
I have one, and they really aren't worth it, lol. They are cool at first, but then once they collect a bunch of dust, you don't want it anymore. :p
 
once used they are never as clean as when brand new. they look dirty all the time. acrylic builds up a static charge that makes dust cling to it. not enough to damage anything but enought to make blowing it out to clean impossible.
 
My friend has one, it sucks, he hates it, after you have undone the side a few times it gets craze cracks, I worked on a customers once, 85% of the standoffs had broken away from the remaining thread or from the plastic itself.

Guess you never had a Danger Den case?
 
If you are going to buy an acrylic case. Dangerden makes some truly awesome cases. Most other makers make them from way to thing of material, resutling in cracks and broken threads.
 
DangerDen uses much thicker sheets of acrylic. Those fuckers are strong. I saw one of their dudes stand on one of their earlier box cases to demonstrate the strength of their craftsmanship. Though I dont like their box design cases, their newer tower models are more like it.
 
I thought Danger Den was a just a water cooling designer, I'll have to look into that, the ones I had seen were cheap knock offs.
 
You can always make your own acrylic cases fairly easy too. Online companies cut your panels to the size you want (about 150$ for good 1/4" thick acrylic - same as the DangerDen stuff) and you pick up a set of AC ryan corner cubes + screws for about 15$.
 
You do need some particular bits to drill acrylic. Regular bits can work but if you are not carefull you can break the acrylic. I have had good luck using brad point bits with spurs that score the material first and cut from the outside of the hole in. Regular drill bits cut from the inside out, this cutting action trys to force the material out away from the center of the hole potentialy cracking the acrylic. I have seen special bits at Tap plastics but never used them.
 
Spend the money on a DangerDen otherwise don't bother... really just don't bother.

I've never used anything but regular bits and a drill press. You need to drill VERY slowly through any plastic. It should NOT exit the bit in chips, but long strands of plastic.
