Acronis boot disk Imaging Questions

I've been so confused by this and have been looking for a solid answer for awhile..

Here's my dilemma, I've got a Dell Poweredge 1800 Server 2k3 box with a PERC 4/DC. Right now it's got 2 partitions that I plan to use gparted to resize. That part I think I've got a handle on and seems easy enough to do but first I want to take image backups of these two partitions just in case anything goes wrong and I have to restore.

Most people have been recommending I just use Acronis True Image to do a backup but here's where I'm confused, do I need a certain version of True Image or can I use just any boot disk from any version of True Image? say True Image home? I don't need to install the Windows application, I just need to boot and backup so the boot disk needs to recognize the PERC 4/DC card right? I want to backup to an external USB hard drive, does a True Image boot disk support this? Also, do I need to create the boot disk from the same box I'll be booting it from? In the case I need to restore, can I restore on different sized partitions, as long as they are at least as big as the original partitions?

If there's an alternative to True Image that can do all this I'd love to hear suggestions

I actually just used Clonezilla to do a simple clone of a single partitioned IDE hard drive onto a newer/bigger IDE hard drive.. it will work in my scenario with the PERC 4/DC controller? The thing about Clonezilla I wasn't sure about was whether it would recognize a USB external hard drive
