ACPI Keeps restarting my system?

Hey all,

I just put a system together of old parts i had about, Its a Duron 750mhz, 128 megs of ram, and some type of board (i forget). Anyway, i got windows XP on it, and remembered when i got it from a guy who upgraded he had a restarting issue, where the computer would just restart.

I have looked for a pattern and nothing seems to trigger it, however windows XP has ALOT of ACPI issues in its logs, saying it is trying to write/read from a port that isnt there?

Does anyone have a clue how i sort this? i have looked all over the BIOS, and windows XP settings, its a fresh and clean install of XP (it did the same on 98SE) and i have reset the BIOS to defaults with no results.

Any ideas would be great!

thanks!

I ran into this last Friday.

I looked on MS website and they said that a BIOS flash may solve the issue. I don't do that to customers PCs so I just recommended upgrading the offending hardware.

before I recommended new hardware I disabled ACPI in the bios to try and solve the issue but Windows refused to boot without it.

I also had set the power profile to always be on, disabled hibernation, and made sure that all power saving options were turned off. The PC still crashed.

Hope this helps but I wasn't able to find a clean and neat solution to the issue.

Try installing XP without ACPI support... when setup says to hit F6 for storage drivers, hit F5 instead. Wait a minute, and it'll pop up a list... just choose "standard pc"
