I'm looking to buy a new LCD at around $350. These 2 models have caught my eye. The VX924 has some good reviews but I have yet to see anything substantial on the Acer AL1951B. I did read somewhere that the Acer had a glossy screen like the Sony XBrites, which I prefer, and I believe it's an 8bit panel instead of 6, so color reproduction should be better. Any opinions?

Acer AL1951B
Brightness 400 cd/m2
Contrast Ratio 700:1
Response Time 6ms

Viewsonic VX924
Brightness 270 cd/m2
Contrast Ratio 550:1
Response Time 3ms gtg; 6ms wbw

Thanks!

The Acer has a somewhat pleasant design, however on this forum it seems we hear a lot more positive comments about viewsonic in terms of picture quality and gaming performance. I say go for the viewsonic.

I have the VX924 lcd and had seen that acer on newegg after and was wishing i'd gotten that instead. But too late for me.

I don't think this lcd is really bad or anything like that except backlighting, but the limited color sorta makes me wonder what panels like the acer would look like + it has a very good response time too.

I say if you find reviews saying good things about that acer, then go with that instead.MHO.

Actually, I'm pretty sure this uses a TN panel, which is a 6-bit panel as well, although the decent contrast ratio leads me to believe that the screen might be a PVA.

Thanks for the input. I think I'll wait for an in depth review or try to find the panels here in town to do a comparison (no luck so far). I doubt the response time would be much of a factor between these 2, but I really want to know if the "better" brightness and contrast specs on the Acer truly translate into a better display. :D

The backlight issues popping up with the VX924 are also starting to concern me...

The Acer AL1951B has 16.7 million colors.

Doesn't that make it an 8bit panel with the lowest response time available for 8 bit panels???

I wouldn't trust the 16.7 million colors thing. LCD manufacturers have resorted to outright lies when presenting LCD specs. There have been some other manufacturers who listed their 6-bit TN panels as 16.7 million colors (Hyundai l90d+, which has been confirmed to be 6 bits).
