Well its Christmas. Yay.

So I get a new Solid state drive for my laptop to replace the slow spinner drive in it. No big deal right?

Boy was I wrong. First thing I try to do is create a system image to a back up drive. Nope not enough space for a shadow copy on all the partitions. So I open up disk management Lovely Acer has 5 partitions, cannot assign drive letters to any of them other than the primary partition. Ok path one fail.

Path Two
Fired up Acronis True Image, Attempted to clone the factory drive to a usb external drive. Its not detected.... Only detects my usb drive.

Path Three
Put in SSD and boot with Windows 8 installation disk. Go to install says invalid key. hmms Not going to purchase another key from mircosoft. When I should be able to use my factory one.

Path Four
Ok i'm about done with this really about to call Acer support and call them every name in the book. Using their recovery tools I created a recovery drive on my external usb drive. Put the SSD in the laptop booted and used the recovery options to do a factory reset. Currently sitting at 45% completed.


Has anyone else come across this problems? I haven't touched the data on the original drive. I would prefer to be able to do a system image so I don't have to re install everything given the factory reset from backup drive actually works for me.

I am still going to call ACER and call them every name under the sun because i cannot do a system image. Like really?

Any suggestions?
 
check the acer bios for AHCI/IDE/legacy options, set them to legacy/ide and see if acronis will detect the internal drive after that. if that still fails, put both drives into a desktop to clone them..
 
Oh I forgot to mention that.

I put both the drives in my desktop to clone them. Acronis doesn't detect the factory Acer drive. So I couldn't clone that way either.

The factory reset using the usb backup drive worked. Granted I'm missing all my installed programs and settings.
 
Update.

I was able to clone the hard drive in my desktop using Macrium Reflect. Strange Acronis True image didn't detect the drive, perhaps I will have to buy the newest version now.
 
acronis sucks, macrium is awesome, older versions of ghost are still good also
 
newest ghost is V12 I believe, and it works ok.

I have to have one of each and sometimes just use *nix dd copy instead
