I've been waiting for a nice sale on monitors for a while since my 5 year old 17" CRT is going crazy with these lines everywhere (only way to keep them away is to make the screen size smaller on the OSD controls).

I just saw this Acer H233H in the Best Buy ad the other day and it looks very intriguing at $139.99. Does anyone know if this is a good monitor? As for what I use it for, it is for mostly web browsing and games like TF2 and L4D as well as occasionally hooking it up to my laptop via HDMI.

Is this monitor good for gaming? It is 5ms but I don't know if that is accesptable for gaming nowadays. I am a little worried about the 1920x1080 but at 23" I think words will still be legible and even then I think it could still be scaled down.

Another concern of mine is that it has a matte screen rather than glossy, and I think glossy has always been considered having brighter and more vivid colors?

Sorry for all the question, this is my first LCD monitor purchase.

I really enjoy mine. No complaints. :)

The glossy screens do seem to show better colors and whatnot, but I am doing just fine with the matte. If you are in the market for a glossy 23" display, check out the LG W2361VG-PF (about $249.99 at Best Buy I believe). It looks like a really nice panel for the money. It also has a 2m/s rt as well, IIRC.

Thanks. Any idea how well this runs games being 5ms?

And I've decided that a matte screen is better for me, since my computer is right next to a window.

I would be interested in hearing how the input lag/ghosting is for this monitor too. However, I went to 3 of my local Best Buys yesterday and they were all out of them- may not even be able to get one now.

I've been trying to call them for the past 30 minutes and no one answer the phone no matter what I select (even though they have been open for 2 1/2 hours) I am just going to go down there and see it they have it.

Edit: Just got back, they showed 2 on hand, but couldn't find them. I got a raincheck for it though because there was nothing stopping me from ordering it online for instore pickup.

I just buy the V233H from Fry's Electronics for $160, but I think I might return it and get this one since it's $20 cheaper.

I've read the H233H and V233H are pretty much the same other than the H has small speakers and the bezels are different.

So I thought I'd mention, I found that on the V233H, the HDMI port on the monitor does not seem to work with computers. I've tested it with an 8800Ultra and a 4870 X2 and both report "no signal detected" using DVI to HDMI cables (two different cables even). I Googled the problem and it seems like this is pretty common. Though perhaps a laptop with a straight HDMI output might have better luck.

The HDMI did work with my Bluray player and cable box. So it does sort of work, just doesn't seem to like computers for some reason. The DVI and VGA ports work fine of course.

Not sure if the H233H has this problem too. It's annoying, but for $140 or $160, I could live with it.

I think that is just for the V233H. I have read tons of reviews for the H233H and no one mentioned problems with using HDMI with a computer.

I own the H233H. Very solid monitor with better than average colors and contrast. PC games look super using it. I also have my 360 and PS3 connected. No issues whatsoever. If you found it for $139, you should jump on it. I've owned maybe 12 monitors within the past 6 years and it's in my top 3.

I just got back from BestBuy with the H233H. I can't test the HDMI to DVI connection yet, that'll have to wait until tomorrow.

So far though, I'm liking this more than the V233H. The stand is much better and doesn't wobble as much. And the touch sensitive controls work much better than those junk controls on the V. I also like the Input button (the V doesn't have one, so you have to go through the menu to change inputs).

Really happy I saw this thread and I will save $20 too. :)

Edit: I just realized I was saying V233H. It was actually the X233H I got at Fry's (not sure if there is a V233H).

Nice, you're lucky to have gotten one. I hope they get more in so I will have a chance to use this raincheck.

I have no lag or ghosting whatsoever in games. Gaming is pretty much all I do with it.

I actually like it better than my 30" Dell for gaming. lol

I have a P235H that I got on Newegg for $140 during the black friday sale. I like it. This too runs at 1920x1080 and I can read the text pretty well. AI think my monitor has a 2ms response times, but I have a Samsung 52" LCD that runs games pretty well also, it only has a 12ms response time, so 5ms should be decent.

Actually not a bad monitor depending on what version of this monitor you get. I have actually seen 3 different types under the exact same model number on this one take youre choice. One is matte one is glossy the bases differ on two out of three on the bottom sides of the stand. One is silver one is black silver has 4 pads black has six. The one that has six will be about 5/8ths difference in height taller. But to top it off one will say hdmi on front that is the one gloss version with the black under the base. The matte version will have a silver base at the bottom of the stand. The third one will have a total diff firmware on the monitor but with black base only diff is it has the same options as with the silver bottom base. All in all not a bad monitor at all if you buy 2 that match is all. Text is way better on the one with black base and the 6 pads and says hdmi on the front bezel actually more prominent to see.

When you say one is matte, and one is glossy, do you mean the screen? I thought they were all matte screened.

Regardless, after speaking to Best Buy customer service, I was given the option of ordering it online with free shipping. So now I am about to order it online.

depending on what revision of this monitor you get it will be matte or glossy so many variances on these monitors.

I just received this monitor. All I have to say is that it is amazing...And huge!!! I had no idea it would be this big! For only $139.99. Also, the price has since gone back up to $209.99. I'm so happy with this right now. And there ar no dead pixels! My only problem was it seems like it may have been used before since some sticker and stuff were taped back on and the VGA cable was half unwrapped, but that's an issue I'll take up with Best Buy.

Thanks for everyone's help.

Second day of using this and it is astill amazing. I have a question though, I thought I had read online that it runs at 75hz, but I can only see it run at 60hz. I checked the Advanced setting and I can't set it any higher.

Nope it's 60hz. But it can do 75 at 1152x864.

Wow, that is very misleading. Fortunately I don't think it makes a big difference to me right now anyway, it was just a perk. I could never see the difference between 60hz and 85 hz on m old CRT anyway.

Is it normal to have a small amount of humming come from the display? I can only hear it if I put my ear up against it and everything else is absolutely silent. I can't even hear it over my computer.

where the pics at?
Coming up!

Behold! Oh, and sorry about the palstic still nt he base, I meant to take it off but forgot, but you can figure what it looks like.

And all for $139 (+ 6% tax :/ ) What a great deal. I couldn't be happier and I hope it lasts me a while.

This is to show it has very little backlight bleed, just a very small line along the very bottom, about half an inch in height. Everything else is just glare and amplified by the camera. BTW, see if you can spot the red pixel. It's not from my monitor, but actually from my camera!

Actually maybe it can do 75hz. Powerstrip says it should do 1920x1080 at 74hz but the advanced options are grayed out for some reason. If you have an nvidia card you could try manually setting it in the drivers (I can't on an ATI).

Looking through the Nvidia control panel, It will only let you select 75hz at 1152x864.

Does anyone know why H position, V position, Focus, Clock, and Auto Config is grayed out in the OSD?

oh, I never hooked up VGA so I never noticed that. Thanks. I'm loving this monitor more and more every day. It's so big and bright. And best of all, it cost $125 after I got $15 back because of my concerns it had been opened before.

i own that display and i pray you dont have the problem I do. Ive had the Display 10 months now and ive had to send it in the Acer 4 times (it takes exactly 1 month before you get it back). for random things. From extreme hissing to just completely dying.

in my Honest opinion the Monitor is a Piece of shit and im sorry to say that. Ive been through 2 different acer h233h's after the 4th time i sent it in they sent me a brand new one wich ended up dying so instead of sending it back for the 5th time i chucked it in the dumpster.

I hope you dont have the luck ive had. keep in mind if you leave your house Turn it off. I came home one time to the monitor Hissing and smoking wich could of started a fire. Thats just a warning for you just in case

It should be able to do 75hz.

oh btw, the humming goes away as you increase the brightness. What I did was turn the brightness to 100% and then use your video card control panel to turn the brightness back down to your desired level. Then it's all good.

Well that sounds pretty scary. I hope that doesn't happen to me. But if it did, having cost $125 to begin with I don't think I would bother getting it repaired unless there was a local facility they have, I wouldn't bother paying the huge amount to ship it to them.

well ive never had to pay for shipping. i bought it at bestbuy and it came with a 3 year acer warranty so bestbuy handled it all. but 4 months out of 10 i didnt even use the monitor cause it was in repair. ive owned 2 different monitors wich were the same Models H233H's and i had problems with them both.

at this point i no longer buy acer products after my experience

oh really? Best Buy handles any warranty work? That's really good to know since I bought it there (well online but still Best Buy).

well they handle the Shipping BACK to acer. they dont do any of the work. dont get me wrong the monitor was Great while it worked but unfortunately the 2 i had were down more then up.

its possible i got 2 from a bad batch i dont know. just wanted to warn you about leaving it on when your out. good luck with it. let me know in the future how it goes

Thanks. I never leave anything turned on when I'm out anyway so that should be fine.

X223H. Zero problems.

Is it me or do I see color banding in the middle of the RGB stripes going across the screen? Does anybody else have that problem?

What settings are everyone using with their PC, Xbox and PS3 ? The preset "graphics" mode seems to be the most vibrant for games. I have my xbox set to YCbCr709 and Expanded. The only problem is that I can not seem to calibrate the monitor properly on my PC using the lagom site. The first 3 black squares are indistinguishable from the background as well as the last row on the white saturation page. My L227WTG had better detail than that. I'm very tempted to run out and pick up an LG w2361v so that I can test them side by side. Otherwise my initial impressions are very positive and I can confirm that text is really sharp.

Also, not to rant but what's with all the variants of this model? Some sites say this monitor is glossy while others say that it's matte. Some say that it's 5ms while others claim that it's 2ms even Acer's own website! How the heck are you supposed to know which version you are getting?

Anyways, please share your settings !!
