I'm looking to get a widescreen monitor between 20-22." I was pretty much turned off all the 22 inchers because they're all TNs, so I was looking at the Viewsonic 2025 (dont want dell, and cant afford NEC).

Anyway, I went into Bestbuy to buy the viewsonic, or at least check it out, and it was next to the Acer AL2216WBD. The Acer blew away the Viewsonic particularly in terms of VIEWING ANGLE.

Here's my question. I read multiple complaints about the Acer's viewing angles, especially the vertical angle looking from below, and I also assumed the P-MVA panel of the Viewsonic would have better angles just because of the specs (176/176 degrees vs 170/160). But in the store, the Acer had better angles in every direction, and a seemingly brighter display (despite lower specs -- and yes I made sure both had their contrast ad brightness on full).

I know the Acer upgraded recently to be HDCP compliant, but I was wondering if anyone heard anything about improved viewing angles as well, or a different panel being used (or if anyone has an explanation for so many complaints from a monitor that looked stunning in the store).

Im not a gamer and really just want a monitor for internet/word processing, and watching a lot of movies. So response time is a non-issue for me. Has the Acer been improved in more ways than the HDCP, or is it really just the luck of the draw and some are great and some are garbage?

thoughts???

Are you sure you weren't looking at the VX2035WM? This one uses a TN panel, and I could see it being the same or inferior to the Acer (which also uses a TN panel).

If it really was the VX2025WM, then what you are describing makes no sense to me. A P-MVA panel would have better angles than a TN. There are no "better" TNs as far as that is concerned, at least not enough to be even close to a P-MVA.

Perhaps there was some weird lighting effect going on that made you perceive things incorrectly or something.

I have a CMO TN panel myself, and the change in contrast with respect to vertical angle is getting to me more and more each day. With a movement of mere inches, I see noticeable change. Might have to send it back to costco and buy my workstation Dell 2007wfp S-IPS off the business I work for.

thanks for the quick reply shifty. I checked the viewsonic website just to double check (the base is different on the 2025 and 2035), and I was definitely looking at the 2025 in the store.

I also realize that what I'm saying makes no sense on paper. It's not that the 2025 had bad angles; the angles were very good. It was just that the Acer had BETTER angles.

Even if I were to disregard my comparison of the two monitors and just look at the Acer alone, the angles were the best I've ever seen on a TN, and maybe even an MVA (I know, sounds like I don't have a clue, but its true). I went as low as I could get and tilted the monitor up, and the picture remained clear and vibrant. But many reviews, including the behardware site that many people reference, show a different picture of the vertical viewing angle, and claim its very bad.

I'm totally confused, since I cant disregard what I saw with my own eyes. Anyway, thanks again for the input.

That is very strange. I will point you towards this, an independent test of the two monitors on Face a Face (a french site).

Go to the bottom menu and go down to Angles de Vision. That is what you should be seeing... That is basically what my Chi Mei TN does. Top angles look okay, bottom angle loses contrast almost immediately, which is my biggest beef with my monitor.
