What is the real benefit to the ACD 20" in comparison to the 2005FPW? I see a lot of people recommending the ACD because of better quality (or lack of backlighting issue), but is it worth £223 more? Also, the 2005FPW has a better contrast ratio and brightness so surely it is worth the risk of getting a backlighting issue (and simply returning it until you have one without a backlighting issue). Or am I missing something else? (This is me asking for your opinion on which to get basically)

The ACD has the same panel as the 2005, but it has better backlighting and in my experience quality control. The surface of the screen is protected better on the ACD with a less reflective, stronger layer. Since they use the same panel and contrast is determined by the panel, LG's(the panel manufacuter) own specs agree with Apple's, so Dell is likely using a different method to measure contrast. As far as brightness, yes the Dell can get brighter, but to the point of unbearably bright - you'd in all likely hood never max out either monitor's brightness.

As far as disadvantages of the Apple, it has only has 1 input (DVI-D), no rotation/height adjustment and no menu system (only power and brightness can be controlled). Not really a big issue with DVI-D since the Dell blocks out most options connected via DVI-D as well.

I owned the Dell 2005 and after numerous issues with it, I returned it after my 5th one and bought a 20" ACD. Image quality is better on the Apple side by side - no contest, but you pay for it...now if its worth the extra cost is up to you :p.

I can't see it having that much better quality. Just go for the Dell. Apple products are overpriced, that's why you have to pay more. That's just how the company works. Mind you they make a mean mp3 player haha.

I have no bias towards Apple and never owned one of their systems, but I have owned the 2005 and the 20" ACD. There is a quality difference. Ask anyone who has used both. I used them both side by side on my system. The Apple doesn't look nearly as purple as the Dell off angle either - go figure you'd think they'd be the same. I was able to get the Apple for $800+tax as I got a student discount and my university had a discount - at that price I love it. I'd be harder pressed to reccomend it at $1000 though. That's close the price of my computer  .

Also check the resale price for any Apple product on eBay - then do the same for any other company's comprable products ;).

has anyone else owned both and care to share their experience with the monitors? i just don't know if i can justify £220+ more for marginal improvements

so you all definetly think it would benefit me to go for the apple instead of the dell? well i think i'll take that plunge then

I got an ACD over the dell.

There isn't a 50+ page thread full of problems with the ACD either ;)

That's because there are likely far less people who own/can afford the ACD's. ;)
