The new Winamp 5.1 supports accPlus. I hadn't heard of this codec before so upon listening to some streams of it I'd have to say I'm quite impressed. At 64kbps it sounds as good to me as 192 mp3. It supports 5.1 at 160kbps. I'd like to see some devices support this, like the PSP for example, so you can store the same or better qulity tracks in half the space. Check this site out for some streams. Be sure to listen to the Splinter Cell 3 5.1 tracks, there's on linked at the top and the rest are in the "on demand" tab. You'll need Winamp 5.1.
 
Yes, very impressive, I cannot really seem to tell much difference above 64kbps, I'm considering "redoing" some of my music to save on space. Compared to 192kbps mp3, my ears really cannot tell even 64kbps, but my mind is making me want to do them at 128kbps.
 
I'd rather go with something open and documented, like ogg, mp3, or flac. Something I'll be able to play in 10 years without converting. The samples do sound very nice (this site has been around at least a year), but I'd rather have an open format than uber-low bitrates.

 
Seeing as its the codec used by satellite radio, I don't think it's going anywhere.
 
satellite radio - ehh uhh there's lotsa times I pick out artifacts listening to sirius - this aint putting a good taste in my mouth about the coded ... I could be wrong - but I encode my mp3s at 320 ... it hurts the soul wasting the HD space and such -but- I've gotten fed up with each sound system upgrade I find more and more of my archived CDs and mp3s not sounding pristine

Yeah I know that eventually I'll be a full fledged audiophile. And while I cannot afford the hobby as much as I'd like to now, I know I still have better speakers than most (Friends with PC Klipsch systems, and Logitech systems etc, still don't match up against my Denon receiver and entry-to-midlevel speakers). That's why I personally use FLAC. Sure it eats up way more space than even a 320kps mp3, but it's worth it to me. Unlike you however I intentionally got harddrive just for archiving my CD collection and I think it's more than worth the space.

I'll just continue using foobar... it wasn't too long ago that I was using winamp though.
