accessory for blowhole?.. does it exist?

i just bought a new hole saw a while ago for 80mm fans (3") hole saw... i am about to drill a blowhole for the first time in metal... other times were done in plastic which was fairly easy even without a hole saw... cutting the hole isnt going to be difficult with a hole saw since i will get a round hole.... but cutting the holes for the fan screws, will be kinda hard... when i did blowholes in plastic, and i mis-align the fan screw holes, i usually grind it a lil bit so its bigger but the screw can reach the hole... but right now im doing it in metal and once i cut the fan screw holes, i cannot make it any bigger

now, im just trying to find out if theres like a printable template for a blowhole so i can tape it on and drill with it as a guide... ive looked thru the FAQs but i havnt found one so im checking with you guys first just in case this really exists

im not so sure about that... why dont u just get some velcro with double sided sticky tape on the back and cut it to size? you wont be able to see it most likely.

anyways, i did google for like 5 min and finally found a template...

what size drill bit should i use for the fan screw hole?

Whatever the screw size is, use the next bigger size drill bit.
 
wayne i mean stick the velcro to the case, and over the hole for screws on the fan, then just velcro it onto the case.
 
I normally just masking tape up the area I am going to cut then place the fan on top and using the inside of a biro (the thin bit) push it through each screw hole to mark the four of them and then use a ruler to draw a line between the fan holes in opposite corners to get the center for the actual fan hole. Nice and easy and gives good acurate results.

good idea but i have this paranoidity thing about computer stuff/mods that it has to be solid and screwed and bolted down solidly... i also need a way to secure the fan grill so yea..

good idea tho, i may try that sometime

i got a template off gideontech but my printer didnt print it out well (low on ink)... so i redrew the lines and circles and it matched up and i checked it and it was perfect so i just drew 2 diagonal lines from two screw holes and took the point that met in the center for the mandrel of the cup saw to start drilling on

2. grab sharp object (Ice pick?)
3. Posistion sharp object where you want the fan to go.. and strike it repeatedly with the hammer creating a large jagged hole.
4. Duct tape the fan on by simply putting it over the hole and stretching the duct tape over the top.
5. For added voltage to the fan cut off an old plug to something and wire it directly to the wall so it will spin 10x faster!

LOL funny stuff.


Pretty soon im going to be doing this to the window on my case.

take white tape and tape it over where you want to cut. get one of those (what the hell are they called i stayed up all night trying to think of the name.) its used to draw a perfect circle. and measure the fan (i think u said 3 inches) and set the circle drawing thing to 1.5 inches (when you draw it, it will come out to 3 inches) and draw it on there. then dont put up the circle thing. press down kinda hard on the pointy end to make a mark where the center is. then draw a cross like this

forget the numbers and the horizontal and vertical lines. its the only one i could find. but draw the lines going diagnle to make sure you have dead center. then with a metal cutting drill bit drill through the center. after your through get your hole saw and line the center drill bit up with the hole you cut (the guide bit in the center or the hole saw) and put it in the hole. then drill through. then take the fan after your done cutting and line it up the way you want it and take a sharpee and put a dot where all the screw holes are. then take the drill but that fits in the holes (take a drill bit and find one that fits in the screw holes on the fan.) and drill it slow to make sure you dont skip. then after you have dont all four if there are rough edges sand them smoothe

btw, its not cutting thru... i wrote another thread for cutting, i dunno if i should have just put it in here but its kinda a different issue since this is talking about a template and the other one is about what happened when i tried cutting

You have a few options, the main problem you will have, even using a template, is that the drill bit tends to wander a little at first. One way to get around this is to use a small punch to put a slight indent in the panel before you attempt to drill it.

There is also a small device you can use to help you centre the drill bit, using the fan grill as a guide.

The general jist of it is this:

The shaft on the left goes into your drill. On the right hand end of it there is a bevel which will allow you to centre it in teh screw hole of the fan grill. As you push the spinning drill into the hole, that piece on the right retracts into the middle section exposing the drill bit, and drilling you a perfectly centred hole.

I just wish I could remember what they are called :(
I highly recommend getting one of these. Not many people know about them, but they make almost any accurate hole drilling a breeze!

a miller?... not sure... if anything, it might start with a B....... or a de-burrer?

yea, i ve used punches in school and i know what its for but i dont own a punch so i just took a nail and made a small dent so the drill bit doesnt slide

i dont really understand your description of that thing.. maybe you could describe it again or look for an article about it or pics from google?, sry

even if i know how to drill straight holes, i still have a problym on hand which is why isnt my hole saw working... am i doing something wrong?

bit-tech had a free 120mm fan template, I used that for cutting the circle, which I did with a Dremel and flexshaft attachment (note: you DO want to tape around your circle with masking tape, it will reduce the chance of costly mistakes). Once I had that set, I used the 120mm fan I was going to mount as a square template for where to put the screw holes. I used a combination of mechanical pencil and wet-erase marker to draw where I wanted things. Then I matched the next largest bit to the 8/32 bolts I was using, and drilled. I didn't have any "walking" problems with the drill bit.

I got a round X-Acto hobby file fom a hobby store to smooth down the holes I drilled, and I was set. Finished results are pictured in this thread:

btw, i did finish the blowhole... but i really messed up when i started off full speed at 1200rpm on steel and kinda dulled the teeth and couldnt get thru and i kept trying like a couple hours and this really boogled my mind so i picked up the packing and found out that theres a chart and it said for steel, i should cut no faster than 115rpm... so i tried going slower and i cut thru in a few minutes
